The list of cornerbacks Antonio Brown has left for toast is as long as it is distinguished. That said, we fully understand why the Bills' Stephon Gilmore isn't backing down from one of the biggest challenges of the season when the Steelers come to Buffalo this Sunday.
The former first-round pick would love to match up with one of the league's best receivers -- both as a route runner and after the catch.
"I wish I could follow the best receiver, but whatever the coach want me to do, I'll do," Gilmore said, via the Buffalo News' Jay Skurski. "It's another good receiver this year I'm playing against. I went against a lot of great receivers and did my thing."
But with cornerback Ronald Darby returning to the lineup, there's a chance coach Rex Ryan decides not to move his corners around the formation based on matchups.
"When you do have two really good corners you feel great about, then most of the time ... they're really comfortable playing left and right," Ryan said. "But, I will say this: Stephon is playing about as good as any corner in the league right now, probably. I mean, he's right there. The last three weeks in particular, he's been absolutely outstanding. We'll see what we think. It's way too early to tell you who's going to match with who or whatever."
The Redskins used that strategy in Week 1, and while Josh Norman had success against Brown, the Steelers wisely had him line up opposite Bashaud Breeland, who had one of the longest nights of his career. When it was over, Brown had eight receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns. For the season, Brown has 88 receptions for 1,052 yards and 11 touchdowns.
This has been a recurring theme throughout Brown's career. Last season, he torched the Broncos' Chris Harris, one of the league's top corners, to the tune of 16 receptions for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to that matchup, Harris hadn't allowed a touchdown in two years.
For what it's worth, Gilmore ranks 70th among all cornerbacks this season, according to Pro Football Focus, while Darby is 35th.
Both the Bills and Steelers remain in the thick of the playoff race. At 7-5, Pittsburgh is currently in the No. 8 slot while the 6-6 Bills are 10th.
