That really escalated quickly. The Patriots came into Kansas City hoping to flex their offensive muscles for the first time this season and instead got shredded in every facet of the game on Monday, losing 41-14 in a palindromic beatdown to the Chiefs in Kansas City.
It was ugly from the start for New England; the Patriots highlight of the night was probably getting to see how Jimmy Garoppolo handled being under center in not-so-closely-contested primetime game.
Pick any facet of the game, and New England was completely dominated. But the biggest concern was Tom Brady. And it's not close.
Less than a month ago Brady said "when I suck, I'll retire." If he's true to his word he'll walk away tomorrow, because he straight up sucked on Monday. There's plenty of reasonable excuses relating to a lack of weapons and a lack of protection for Brady. But the 37-year-old quarterback -- who's struggled previously this year -- made tons of mistakes throughout the night.
Brady's mistakes were ugly too.
Maybe this was partially Julian Edelman's fault, but who was he throwing to here?
And what was he thinking here?

Anyone totally melting down and calling for either a) the Patriots to move on from Brady or b) Brady to actually retire is falling prey to a serious bout of #HotSportsTakes. We're just four games into the season.
The Pats offense looked terrible four games into 2013 too and they recovered nicely until Rob Gronkowski suffered his knee injury against the Browns.
But don't absolve Brady of blame either. He looked awful on Monday. Red flags are flying and there's reason to be concerned.
2. Brady is Still the Starter
And please don't ask Bill Belichick if the "quarterback position [will] be evaluated."
3. Chiefs Impressive Offense
Oh yeah, the Chiefs won the game. And they looked really good doing it. Alex Smith was 20 of 26 for 248 yards and three touchdowns and looked like more than a game manager for large stretches of the game.
The Chiefs piled up 303 yards in the first half against the Patriots defense, the most ever allowed under Belichick. (The defense was good too, shutting out the Patriots for the first time since 2006 when they failed to score in Miami against Nick Saban.)
Jamaal Charles was particularly freaky, scoring three touchdowns -- two receiving -- and rushing for 92 yards on 18 rushing attempts.
He briefly left to get an IV but returned. Charles showed everything that makes him so special on Monday night too.
The former Texas back didn't just pick up yardage out of the backfield. Andy Reid split him out wide, used him in a bubble screen and he picked up the short yardage. A really well-designed play and perfect usage of Charles in terms of mismatches.
Knile Davis is fun to watch as well -- he rushed 16 times for 107 yards against the Patriots. It's entirely possible the Chiefs offense will be better this year. Don't bank on slowing down their rushing attack very easily.
Another revelation in this game? Second-year Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
The 6'6" behemoth from Cincinnati looks like a steal out of last year's draft and continued his breakout 2014 with a strong effort against the Pats. Targeted nine times, Kelce caught eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.
He's a yards-after-catch hog, piling up big numbers after receiving the ball. A big target, he's explosive in space once he gets a hold of the ball and the combination makes him a perfect modern day tight end.
Alex Smith has a fun little group of toys to play with this year.
4. 700 pounds of pancake
During a goal line series on Monday night, Reid inserted defensive tackle Dontari Poe in as a fullback, leading everyone to believe the Chiefs were either running or throwing some sort of play-action pass Poe's way. Neither happened but we did get to see Poe block the living heck out of Vince Wilfork, which might've been the best moment from the whole game.
5. Andy Reid's School of Clock Management
It didn't matter because the game was a blowout, but Andy Reid had some pretty terrible clock management at the end of the first half.
With a 1st and 10 on the Pats 14 with 1:10 and 2 timeouts the Chiefs ran a play and burned the clock down to 31 seconds. Then the Chiefs ran another play, only Andy Reid let the clock run down to EIGHT seconds on third down. It didn't make any sense because it limited the Chiefs to just one -- maybe two -- plays in the red zone. They attempted a pass to Dwayne Bowe that came up short of the end zone as the clock ran out in the half.
But a Logan Ryan defensive penalty gave the Chiefs one free play and they kicked a field goal to go up 17-0. Still should've only been 14 points for them in the first half.
6. Bad Day for Pats Secondary
Logan Ryan's the primary scapegoat here, as he repeatedly got torched by the Chiefs passing offense and made a slew of errors in coverage and tackling. He also had the penalty against Bowe to extend the second half and got chewed out by Belichick for it.
Darrelle Revis wasn't sitting on an island either, though. The Chiefs piled up yardage but the one play that really stuck out with Revis was his inability to stop Bowe from picking up a first down on a huge, early 3rd and 8.
How does Revis not make that play on third given where Alex Smith threw the ball? pic.twitter.com/aAsXY4wjqk

7. Solder Benched
The Pats pulled Nate Solder out of the offensive line at one point in the second half. Yes, it had a lot to do with being smoked by Tamba Hali who, amazingly, wasn't offsides on this incredible strip sack of Brady.
Afterwards the Pats plugged Marcus Cannon in at left tackle, officially throwing the line into turmoil. Solder had previously been the only lineman to play every snap at one position.
8. A Matter of Religion
Practicing Muslim and Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah was penalized for excessive celebration after intercepting Brady (his third pick!) and taking it to the house. Abdullah went down in a prayer-like motion and was flagged.
It's against NFL rules for a player to celebrate on the ground:
Players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations while on the ground.
But you're allowed to go to the ground in an act of prayer. It's possible -- even likely? -- the refs misinterpreted what he did on the field and Abdullah acknowledged that as well afterwards.
Husain Abdullah was very gracious about the penalty. Says he was praying but thought he was flagged for sliding into it. "I got too excited"

But if the NFL decides to fine him things could get a little bit noisy.
If the NFL tries to fine @HAbdullah39 for his TD celebration there's going to be some problems.

9. Speaking of Noisy ...
The Chiefs broke the Guinness Book of World Records record for loudest stadium.
#Chiefs fans did it, reclaiming @GWR on @ESPNMondayNight. Okay #12s in Seattle, your move. #GetLoud pic.twitter.com/VbXU8NatwP

This battle between the Chiefs and Seahawks continues to be the most annoying rivalry in sports.
10. You the Real MVP
This Chiefs fan got what felt like 4,000 minutes of airtime. Hopefully he wore the Go Pro while he dominated a celebratory BBQ meal.
