Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is worried about running back Daniel Thomas’ future with the team.
"I'm getting a little queasy about you," Philbin told Thomas in a private chat aired during HBO’s Hard Knocks. "You've got to take responsibility for your own career."
Thomas, in his second year out of Kansas State, was late for a recent team flight, out of dress code for the road trip and late for a team weightlifting session. He also had several run-ins with authorities during his college career.
“From where I sit, I get concerned about that stuff,” Philbin continued. “Obviously, you're going to get fined, but that's not the point. The point is I don't want to be fining anybody. I want guys that do what they're supposed to do and be where they're supposed to be and right now, two times in four days, that's not a good thing."
Thomas was hobbled by a variety of injuries last season, but the 6-foot-1, 233-pounder rushed for 581 yards and caught 12 passes for 72 yards with a touchdown. Still, Philbin didn’t seem convinced that keeping Thomas on the team would be worth an increase in production.
“You got to take responsibility for your own career, what you're doing and when you're doing it,” Philbin said. “I don't want to come talk to you again. I want to see you out there and next time I want to talk to you on a positive thing, not this kind of stuff."
