Journeyman DT Carlton Powell has signed with the New York Giants, his agent Jason Bernstein announced on Twitter.
The Giants conducted workouts on Tuesday to add numbers at defensive tackle after a recent barrage of injuries at the position. Shaun Rogers’ season has been ended by a blood clot, Martin Parker needs back surgery, Chris Canty is on the PUP list because of a knee problem and Marvin Austin was at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Tuesday to have his back examined.
Even Rocky Bernard, who has practiced the last few days, missed the first preseason game because of swelling in his knee.
Powell has played for the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons as well as two separate stints with the Denver Broncos, who drafted him out of Virginia Tech in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. In his career, the 6-3, 312-pound Powell has appeared in only three games.
The Giants could not confirm the signing as of Tuesday night.
