The Jacksonville Jaguars went on a spending spree on the first day of legal tampering, handing out six big contracts. While Trent Baalke and Doug Pederson had money to spend, that doesn't mean everyone on the current roster is safe. On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Jaguars are releasing linebacker Myles Jack.
Jack is just 26 years old and led the Jaguars with 108 combined tackles last season. It was his third season with at least 107 tackles in the last four years. The transaction creates $4.8 million in dead cap, but will save Jacksonville $8.35 million. Jack was set to enter the second-to-last year of his contract. In August 2019, he signed a four-year, $57 million extension that made him the third-highest-paid inside linebacker.
The UCLA product was selected by the Jaguars in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He's an athletic backer who has 82 starts to his name, and should immediately draw interest on the open market. An interesting note from the AP's Mark Long is that the Jaguars have now moved on from their reigning Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee in three straight years. They traded defensive tackle Calais Campbell in 2020, cut kicker Josh Lambo in 2021 and now will release Jack.
It's possible Jack won't be the only Jaguars starter who could be playing for a new team in 2022. ESPN's Michael DiRocco says that Laviska Shenault Jr. is an offensive weapon Jacksonville may be looking to move after reportedly agreeing to terms with wide receivers Christian Kirk and Zay Jones on Monday.
