The New York Jets would probably like a few more position battles -- specifically at right tackle. However, the way they came into training camp, is pretty close to the way they’ll be going into the regular season.
With the exception of the wide receiver position, the team has thus far been pretty fortunate with no injuries. Sione Po’uha (back) and Eric Smith (MCL) are expected to return for the regular season opener.
Each week during preseason, RapidReports will take a position-by-position look at the players we think are likely to make the final cut to 53 on Sept. 2 and those who we think may soon be seeking alternative employment.
QB -- In: (3) Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy. Out: Matt Simms. Analysis: The Jets QBs have been set since the offseason. Sanchez is, according to coach Rex Ryan, the “clear” starter. In OC Tony Sparano’s offense, the team will run the wildcat for Tebow. How much of the wildcat they will run, remains to be seen. After two preseason weeks, it has yet to be unveiled and has been practiced in a cloak of secrecy.
RB -- In: (4) Shonn Greene, Bilal Powell, Joe McKnight, Terrance Ganaway John Conner (FB). Out: Jeremy Stewart. Analysis: Shonn Greene remains the starter. Powell and McKnight still appear to be in a battle for the No. 2 spot, while Terrance Ganaway is finding his way. The team may also look for ways to get Conner the ball.
WR -- In: (6) Santonio Holmes, Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Patrick Turner , Chaz Schilens, Jordan White Out: Eron Riley, Raymond Webber, Stanley Arukwe, Royce Pollard, Dexter Jackson, Joseph Collins. Analysis: Injuries are still the focus here. Holmes is recovering from rib cartilage injury, Kerley from his torn hamstring and Schilens’ latest -- an ankle injury. Rookies Hill and White are making progress as is Turner.
TE -- In: (3) Dustin Keller, Jeff Cumberland, Josh Baker Out: Dedrick Epps , Hayden Smith, Tarren Lloyd. Analysis: Keller has always been a solid safety net for Sanchez, but it may not be enough. His role in Tony Sparano’s offense is still unclear. Cumberland is back from a torn Achilles and has improved in his blocking and pass catching. He looks healthy. Baker is more of a special teams player, but can be effective situationally.
OL -- In (8): D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Slauson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Wayne Hunter, Austin Howard, Caleb Schlauderaff, Vlad Ducasse Out: Matt Kroul, Terrence Campbell, Fred Koloto, Paul Cornick, Dennis Landolt, Robert Griffin. Analysis: It’s hard to know where to begin here. RT Hunter continues to struggle. Tony Sparano has thrown his support behind Hunter, as has coach Rex Ryan. But when pressed Ryan shied away from naming Hunter the absolute starter. Hunter has also been dealing with a lower back issue. Howard is seeing more time and has improved. The coaches talk up Ducasse and he will make the team, but it’s still hard to see where he fits.
DL -- In (6): Mike DeVito, Quinton Coples, Sione Po’uha , Muhammad Wilkerson , Kenrick Ellis, Marcus Dixon. Out: Jay Richardson, Martin Tevaseu , Matt Hardison, Damon Harrison Analysis: In a perfect world, the Jets would like to keep Richardson, Tevaseu and Harrison, but it becomes a numbers game. DeVito and Po’uha remain the stalwarts of this defense and retain their starting positions. DC Mike Pettine said Ellis’ improvement has exceeded expectations and Wilkerson has had one of the best camps of anybody on the team. Rookie Quinton Cople, whose practices were ordinary at best, has had two good preseason games with 8 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 pass defensed, and 1 forced fumble.
LB -- In (9): David Harris, Bart Scott, Bryan Thomas, Calvin Pace, Garrett McIntyre, Nick Bellore, Josh Mauga, Aaron Maybin, Demario Davis . Out. Brett Roy, Marcus Dowtin, Ricky Sapp, Damario Ambrose. Analysis: This group is solid. With a nice mix of younger and more experienced players and working in tandem with the d-line, this group is talented and reliable.
DB -- In (10): Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson, Isaiah Trufant , Ellis Lankster, Josh Bush, LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell, Eric Smith , Antonio Allen. Out: Ryan Steed, Julian Posey, Devon Torrence , Donnie Fletcher, Marcus Lott, Analysis: Bell has picked up the defense well. Landry, who spent much of training camp on a “pitch count” has seen action in both preseason games and looks to be ready for the season opener. One hiccup is Smith’s sprained MCL, which he suffered in the Bengals game. The team hopes he’ll be ready for the opener, but he’s still not practicing and walks with a noticeable limp.
Special teams -- In (3): Nick Folk,TJ Conley , Tanner Purdum. Out: Josh Brown, Derek Chard. Analysis: Brown and Folk were neck-and-neck during training camp – even special teams coach Mike Westhoff has said he doesn’t have a gut feeling on how it would end up. Folk, with the Jets in 2010 and 2011, was never consistent enough for Westhoff and at the outset it seemed like Brown had the edge. However, Folk has pulled ahead with a noticeably higher percentage in field goals made (95% to 80% for Brown) so it’s starting to look like Folk. But this could still go down to the wire.
