Lions coach Jim Schwartz refuses to discuss his first and second teams, choosing to refer to “rotations” and “position groups.”
His dislike of the typical position classification is so strong the team places the word “UNOFFICIAL” on the depth chart included in the weekly press release.
The Lions released their first unofficial depth chart of the season Tuesday, and the first-team offense was unchanged from the team’s 2011 wild card playoff loss to the Saints. The placement of some reserves, however, offers an early indication of where players stand in some key position competitions.
O-line: The unit that ranked among the best in the NFC last season remains intact. Jeff Backus and Gosder Cherilus are tackles. Guards Stephen Peterman and Rob Sims will again flank center Dominic Raiola. The biggest surprise in the pecking order, however, is first-round draft pick Riley Reiff is listed at second-team RT. Reiff began camp with the third team, but his recent run of quality practices has enabled him to unseat Jason Fox as the top reserve. The change isn’t a good sign for Fox, who looks to be battling Corey Hilliard for one of the final roster spots.
Running back: With Jahvid Best (PUP) and Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) likely unavailable for Friday’s preseason opener, Kevin Smith looks poised to assume the starting role. Smith’s workmanlike attitude in camp has earned praise from coaches, and he looks healthier than he’s been in the past two seasons. If Smith can perform well in the preseason, he’ll make a strong case to remain the starter after Leshoure returns from suspension in Week 3. Stefan Logan has taken considerable first-team reps during camp, but is listed below Keiland Williams on the depth chart.
Wide receiver: Detroit is expected to keep six receivers because the offense's speed requires extra depth at the position. Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Titus Young, and Ryan Broyles occupy the top four places on the depth chart, but the fifth and sixth places are the subject of intense competition. Patrick Edwards has played well early in camp, but the undrafted free agent faces a challenge from veterans Maurice Stovall and Lance Long. Stovall and Edwards currently occupy the third-team spots, but the receiver race is expected to continue well into camp.
