What matters: The Panthers are coming off a win over Philadelphia on Monday Night Football. After facing the Eagles, who have now lost seven straight, Carolina now gets the Chiefs, who are on an eight-game losing streak. Kansas City is struggling on offense and defense, while Carolina appeared to get its offense back on track in Philadelphia.
Who matters: QB Cam Newton ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more. He threw for 306 yards, ran for 52 more, and was turnover free for the second game in a row. Chiefs’ RB Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards last week, giving him 294 in the last three games. He also came away with Peyton Manning’s autograph
Key matchup: Carolina RB DeAngelo Williams against Chiefs LBs Derrick Johnson, Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. Williams will likely get the bulk of the carries with Jonathan Stewart nursing an ankle injury. In a season where yards on the ground have been tough to come by for the Panthers, Williams will be running into the strongest part of the Chiefs’ defense.
Injuries of note: Panthers RB Stewart (ankle) hasn’t practiced this week. Neither has CB Captain Munnerlyn (hamstring). Chiefs LB Hali (knee) and OL Ryan Lilja (knee) and Branden Albert (back) have all missed practice this week.
Inside stuff: Newton’s two touchdown runs Monday night gave him 20 in his 27 career games. That’s easily the most by a QB in the last two seasons, and RB Arian Foster is the only player with more (22) over that period.
Connections: Panthers DT Ron Edwards , who is out for the season with an elbow injury, played for the Chiefs from 2006 to 2010. Carolina OL coach John Matsko was a Chiefs assistant from 2006 to 2007.
Stat you should know: The Chiefs haven’t scored a touchdown in the last 174 minutes, 32 seconds of game time.
Record watch: Another loss will tie Kansas City’s team record for longest losing streak. The Chiefs lost nine straight in 1987 and 2007.
