Packing up camp: The Panthers broke camp in Spartanburg, S.C., on Wednesday and will finish the preseason with practices in Charlotte.
Norman steps up: CB Josh Norman had a four-interception day at practice on Tuesday and found himself at CB opposite Chris Gamble on Wednesday. Captain Munnerlyn, who started with Gamble last season, played nickel. Norman, a fifth-round pick in the 2012 Draft, was expected to challenge Munnerlyn in camp but missed time early with a hamstring injury.
Roster move: The Panthers brought RB Armond Smith back after cutting him earlier in camp. He’ll fill in for rookie RB Tauren Poole, who impressed in the preseason opener but suffered a concussion this week. OL Andre Ramsey, signed last week, was released to make room.
Injury updates: LB Jon Beason missed the first preseason game and will also sit out Friday’s game against Miami. He pulled a hamstring early in camp and told Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer he’d be ready for the preseason game against the Jets on Aug. 26. LB Thomas Davis, recovering from knee surgery, should be back at practice next week.
Suiting up for Miami game: In addition to Poole, Beason and Davis, DT Andre Neblett (unspecified medical condition), LB David Nixon (elbow), WR David Gettis (PUP list), and CB Brandon Hogan (knee) are not expected to play. QB Cam Newton is scheduled to play the entire first half.
