Steve Smith wants to burn the film of Thursday’s game, but first, it needs to be graded. (US Presswire) |
The Carolina Panthers now have something in common with President Barack Obama. Both were scheduled to appear at Bank of America Stadium on a Thursday night, and neither one showed up.
The Panthers lost 36-7 to the Giants on Thursday night and were outplayed in every facet. Wide receiver Steve Smith called the team’s performance “disgusting” and “shameful.”
“Everything that we did tonight,” Smith said, “we need to go ahead and get a trash can – a good tin one -- and burn those plays and never go back to them.
But before lighting them on fire, let’s give them a grade:
Offense: D
The ribbon-boards at Bank of America Stadium display a message announcing when the Panthers cross the 50-yard line. They only used it three times in the first half, as the Panthers only advanced as far as the Giants 44. Cam Newton threw 3 interceptions, and the line, missing one starter, had failures across the board.
Defense: F
The Giants were missing a starting receiver and running back, and injuries forced them to mix and match on their offensive line. Still, the Panthers were unable to stop them. The defensive line was gashed by RB Andre Brown. Cornerback Josh Norman was targeted by Eli Manning early and did nothing to make him look elsewhere. Safety Haroki Nakamura was out of position on several long runs and passes.
Special teams: D+
Kicker Justin Medlock’s two kickoffs were strong, and punter Brad Nortman didn’t have any issues, which gets this unit a passing grade. Rookie return man Joe Adams fumbled a kickoff and a punt, and he made poor decisions on when to bring the ball out of the end zone, getting stopped before the 20-yard line twice.
Coaching: C
It was a short week, but the abbreviated preparation didn’t seem to include tackling drills. The same problems that have plagued the team in the first two games -- shoddy tackling and failure to stop opponents on opening drives -- haven't been fixed yet.
