Raiders RB Darren McFadden is one of three key Oakland players who will miss Sunday's game against the Ravens. With backup RB Mike Goodson also out, the club will split carries between Marcel Reece and Taiwan Jones. (US Presswire) |
The Raiders will be without starting running back Darren McFadden, backup running back Mike Goodson and starting defensive tackle Richard Seymour on Sunday against Baltimore.
All three were ruled out Friday, as was cornerback Shawntae Spencer, who will miss his seventh straight game with a sprained foot.
McFadden and Goodson suffered high-ankle sprains last week against Tampa Bay, while Seymour, who has been slowed all season by a sore knee, injured a hamstring.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen was asked if any those four players came close to being healthy enough to play at Baltimore.
"Obviously none of them made enough progress this week that they were able to be up," Allen said. "We'll probably be going through the same thing next week and we'll see where we're at."
Allen said that Desmond Bryant will start in Seymour's place against the Ravens. He didn't name a starting running back but said that both regular starting fullback Marcel Reece and third-string running back Taiwan Jones will get time at running back Sunday.
The starter, Allen said, will be determined by the offensive formations the Raiders decide to use early in the game. Reece took a lot of snaps last week in one-back, three-receiver sets after McFadden and Goodson were injured. Jones, most likely, will work in two-back sets with Reece at fullback.
"Of course, I'm very excited," Jones said. "I trained all training camp. You've got to be patient in this league. I've been waiting for my opportunity, and it's here, so I'm going to try to make the most of it."
Reece played wide receiver in college at Washington before moving to fullback in the NFL. During training camp, he took some practice reps at running back when McFadden, Goodson and Jones were hurt. He has 48 career carries for 234 yards and one touchdown.
Reece said he's comfortable playing in a one-back set -- or any other formation.
"I'm comfortable doing anything the team asks me to do," Reece said. "At that point in time of the game, that's what they needed me to do so that's what I did. It's just an advantage of being a player who knows the entire playbook and is willing to do anything. If they need you in a certain position at a certain time for whatever reason it may be, you just go out and do it."
Practice squad running back Jeremy Stewart, a rookie from Stanford, will travel with the team to Baltimore. Allen said he'll decide Saturday whether to activate him.
Bryant started 10 games last year, all of those at defensive end after Matt Shaughnessy suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 3 against the Jets. He had 35 tackles and five sacks, both career highs. This year, he has 16 tackles and a forced fumble.
Last Sunday against Tampa Bay, Bryant left the game early in the third quarter because of a fast, irregular heartbeat and spent the night at Eden Medical Center. He returned to practice Wednesday.
"I felt fine all week, and I think there were some other things going on last week that kind of caused my heart to do that, but I'm going to make sure I get well-hydrated before the game, get an IV and stuff going," Bryant said. "I'm not worried about that at all. I should be fine."
In another development, Allen said that Willie Smith, despite his recent struggles, will make his seventh straight start at right tackle. Veteran Khalif Barnes, who returned to practice this week after missing six games with a groin injury, is listed as questionable.
"He has continued to work, he has continued to try to improve," Allen said of Smith. "We feel like he's the guy that gives us the best chance to be successful. So he's going to continue staying in that role right now."
Allen also said he's "leaning" toward activating cornerback Ron Bartell from the short-term injured reserve list. Allen said he "would anticipate" that Bartell would start against Baltimore if he is added to the 53-man roster.
Michael Huff will make his seventh straight start at left cornerback. If Bartell starts, it will be at right cornerback, in place of Pat Lee.
Bartell started at left cornerback in the opener against San Diego but suffered a broken shoulder blade. He returned to practice last week.
