Redskins LT Trent Williams received good news regarding his right knee, but there’s still uncertainty about whether he’ll play at Tampa Bay on Sunday.
An MRI revealed only a bone bruise and Williams is day-to-day, according to coach Mike Shanahan. Williams hurt his knee on the second play from scrimmage in Washington’s 38-31 loss to Cincinnati. He returned to open the second half, but lasted only one series.
If he can’t play, veteran Jordan Black will replace him. Black, out of the league a year ago, played Sunday and struggled. Williams’ athleticism enables the Redskins to run their stretch zone effectively. And it helps immensely in their screen game as he can make blocks other tackles can’t. But he’s also missed two games due to injuries in each of his first two seasons. With two losses in a row, the Redskins need him back.
Meanwhile, RB Evan Royster (right patellar tendon) and CB Cedric Griffin (hamstring) are day-to-day. Shanahan still isn’t sure when WR Pierre Garcon (bruised right foot) will return. He’ll test his foot in practice Wednesday. SS Brandon Meriweather (knee) will try to practice this week as well, eyeing his season debut Sunday in Tampa.
