Vikings defensive coordinator Alan Williams spoke after the morning walk-through, addressing the media for the first time since the opening of training camp. He offered a few noteworthy observations.
Williams used analogies from other sports, saying he would use a “pitch count” on 35-year-old DB Antoine Williams (who is entering his 14th season) and that since he was in Minnesota he would use “a hockey lineup” rotation to keep his defensive linemen fresh at the end of games.
Regarding CB Chris Cook, Williams said “he’s outstanding -- he’s quick, intelligent and in shape.” Cook has been playing both the inside and outside CB positions well and that he’s glad to have him on his defense.
Williams likes DT Letroy Guion at the nose tackle position, saying that he’s been phenomenal at camp, getting off blocks and making plays. Williams said all the positions are up for grabs, but “we are very pleased with him.”
Williams is often asked how much of his defense is his and how much it is an extension of coach Leslie Frazier’s defense.
“We’re kind of using the same terminology, for the most part, that has been in, and I’m adjusting to that,” Williams said. “I would rather have me adjust to it rather than all 11 starters to have to change that around.”
