While some believe it’s beginning a year late, the Minnesota Vikings started their rebuilding program this past offseason and as a result will bring a large number of new faces to training camp. All 90 players reported on time Thursday, including 10 new draft choices, eight veteran free-agent signings and 27 undrafted rookie free agents. There are 20 players missing from the 2011 final roster -- among them, notable names such as LG Steve Hutchinson and RG Anthony Herrera (both released), LB E.J. Henderson, CB Tyrell Johnson, S Husain Abdullah and CB Cedric Griffin (free agents), TEs Jimmy Kleinsasser (retired) and Visanthe Shiancoe (free agent) and longtime place kicker Ryan Longwell (released).
Who’s here: RB Adrian Peterson is at camp, which was his intention all along. Since he is coming off a surgically repaired knee, Peterson planned to meet with coach Leslie Frazier on Thursday evening regarding how much he will participate in camp. WR Percy Harvin told reporters during OTAs that he was unhappy about a few things, and it was reported that he requested a trade. He later said that he didn’t know what all the fuss was about and that he would be at training camp. Well, he arrived at camp, but he snuck in the side door and avoided media while he struggled to find his bike to ride to the pre-camp weigh in. Regardless, he will be closely watched when practice starts on Friday to see if his unhappiness returns. WR Jerome Simpson is in camp and is eligible to practice, but he won’t be able to play in the first three games of the regular season because of a league suspension. It will be interesting to watch the number of first-team reps he receives in practice, and who shares them with him. The final two draft-pick signees, CB Josh Robinson and LT Matt Kalil, showed up, ready to compete for playing time and, in Kalil's case, likely a starting position.
Who's not: One hundred percent attendance. Everybody is present and accounted for.
