Jones was waived Saturday by the Cowboys, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
A loaded Cowboys wide receiver depth chart made it unlikely Jones would finish on the final 53-man roster, a result that was confirmed Saturday. Jones could be a practice squad candidate for the Cowboys, however, which was how the 27-year-old made a couple of spot appearances with the Steelers last season.

Jones made a key recovery on Diontae Johnson's fumble in Sunday's loss to the Bills, but the 26-year-old Jones also dropped two passes. As a result, the Steelers promoted Amara Darboh from the practice squad and let Jones go. If Jones clears waivers, he'll likely land on the practice roster.

Jones totaled 24 yards on two receptions in in Thursday night's 21-7 loss to Cleveland.
Injuries to JuJu Smith-Schuster (concussion) and Diontae Johnson (concussion) created an opportunity for Jones to make a mark in his professional debut. He was targeted four times and could see more action if any combo of Smith-Schuster or Johnson are unable to clear the league's concussion protocol prior to the Steelers' Nov. 24 contest against the Bengals.

The Steelers signed Jones to the active roster from the practice squad Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Jones' opportunity on the 53-man roster comes with Ryan Switzer (back) ruled out for Thursday's divisional tilt against the Browns. The Memphis product spent time on the practice squads of the Texans and Chiefs after going undrafted in 2016, and he now gets his first chance on an active roster. Jones logged a 4.48 40-yard dash time during the 2016 combine, and he could offer upside on special teams.

Jones hasn't been heard from much during the preseason, but he turned on the jets to take his lone catch of the night to the house in the final contest. It still seems like an uphill battle for him to claim a roster spot, but his final showing at least gives him an outside shot.
