  • Giorgio Tavecchio: Let go by Titans

The Titans cut Tavecchio from the practice squad Tuesday, Jim Wyatt of the team's official site reports.

The Titans signed rookie kicker Samuel Sloman to the practice squad to take Tavecchio's place. Tavecchio hasn't kicked since 2018 when he connected on all five field-goal attempts, including four from beyond 40 yards.

  • Giorgio Tavecchio: Lands practice squad contract

The Titans signed Tavecchio to the practice squad Tuesday, Jim Wyatt of the team's official site reports.

Tavecchio's addition comes after the Titans placed Tucker McCann (undisclosed) on the practice squad injured list last week. The Titans want dependable depth at kicker, however, as Stephen Gostkowski had a few rough games before Week 9. He got back on track against the Bears, though, drilling all three kicks. Tavecchio last played for the Falcons in 2018 when he hit all five field-goal attempts, including two from beyond 50 yards.

  • Giorgio Tavecchio: Tryout in New England

Tavecchio had a tryout with the Patriots on Tuesday, Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports.

Tavecchio went 5-for-5 on field goals and 8-for-8 on extra points for the Falcons last season, but he struggled in the preseason and was let go at September's roster deadline in favor of Matt Bryant. The Patriots are testing their options with recent addition Mike Nugent missing two kicks in his first two games with the team.

  • Giorgio Tavecchio: Released by Falcons

Tavecchio was released by the Falcons on Saturday, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.

Tavecchio went only 4-for-9 on field-goal attempts this preseason. With reliable veteran Matt Bryant re-signed, it's no surprise to see Tavecchio released. He will look for a job with another NFL team.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: Nightmarish preseason concludes

Tavecchio succeeded on all three of his point-after tries but missed a 53-yard field goal attempt during Thursday's 31-12 preseason win against Jacksonville.

Tavecchio became Atlanta's presumed starting kicker upon Matt Bryant's release in February, but he put forth a woeful 4-for-9 preseason showing that prompted the team to seek alternative options. In three appearances for the Falcons last season, Tavecchio seemed capable of filling Bryant's shoes for a discounted price, knocking down all five of his field goals and all eight PATs. His inconsistency this preseason, however, convinced the Falcons to bring in Blair Walsh for a one-game audition and subsequently work out Bryant on Friday.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: Shanks another in preseason loss

Tavecchio made his only point-after try but missed a 39-yard field goal attempt during Thursday's 19-7 preseason loss to Washington.

Tavecchio was impressive in limited work during 2018, knocking down all five of his field-goal tries and going 8-for-8 on extra points over three games. He's 4-for-8 on field goal tries through four preseason outings, however, and with little proven NFL success outside of last year -- a 76.2 percent field-goal conversion rate in 2017 during his only other active season -- the $2.8 million of salary cap space that was salvaged in cutting Matt Bryant doesn't seem quite as alluring as it did in February.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: Preseason woes persist

Tavecchio converted on his lone point-after try, but missed two of his three field-goal attempts during Thursday's 22-10 loss to the Jets.

Tavecchio's first attempt came on the Falcons' opening offensive drive, a 52-yard try that faded right after New York's Henry Anderson deflected the ball at the line. The 27-year-old Tavecchio converted on his next attempt of 24 yards, but missed another 52-yarder later in the contest. The post-Matt Bryant Era is off to a shaky start, with Tavecchio going 4-for-7 on field-goal tries to this point in the preseason.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: Misses 54-yard kick in loss

Tavecchio converted one of his two field-goal attempts and succeeded on his lone point-after try during Thursday's 14-10 preseason loss to the Broncos.

The Falcons' offense managed only one yard over its first three drives, but it finally was able to string together some first downs and get into scoring range early in the second quarter. On his first attempt of his second campaign with the Falcons, Tavecchio came up short on a 54-yard try, but was able to rebound in the second half by making a 27-yard kick that provided Atlanta with a temporary three-point lead. So long as he doesn't completely go off the rails this preseason, Tavecchio is comfortably in the driver's seat to be the starting kicker, considering Matt Bryant is a free agent, and there's currently no other kicker on the roster.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: To assume kickoff duties

Head coach Dan Quinn said that Tavecchio will take over for Matt Bosher as the team's kickoff specialist, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Despite his heroic Week 16 tackle against now-teammate Kenjon Barner, Bosher does not retain the kickoff duties, as the 29-year-old Tavecchio will now inherit the role. Tavecchio has demonstrated a strong leg in two seasons as a placekicker, knocking down 10 of his 13 career kicks from 40 or more yards out, and five of six attempts from 50-plus yards. Based on that ability to kick it deep, Quinn has nominated him as the man for the job three days out from the preseason opener.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: Set to replace Matt Bryant

Tavecchio is expected to replace Matt Bryant as the Falcons' kicker for 2019, Jason Butt of The Athletic reports.

The team informed Bryant of his release Wednesday, presumably intending to go cheap at the position. Tavecchio's strong performance in 2018 may have contributed to the plan, as he didn't miss any kicks (five field goals and eight extra points) in the three games he played when Bryant was injured. It's still possible the Falcons could bring in competition, considering Tavecchio missed five field goals with Oakland in 2017. He doesn't need to be great to provide fantasy utility, with the Falcons playing in a dome and coming off five consecutive seasons finishing eighth or better in total yards.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: Loses job, but sticks on roster

Tavecchio will be inactive for Sunday's game against the Cowboys but will remain on the Falcons' 53-man roster for the time being, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.

Matt Bryant (hamstring) has been cleared to return from a three-game absence and will reprise his usual duties as the Falcons' kicker, but the team apparently wants to see the veteran in a game setting again before moving on from Tavecchio. Should Bryant suffer a setback Sunday, Tavecchio would represent a good insurance policy after converting all five of his field-goal attempts and all eight of his extra-point tries while Bryant was sidelined.

  • Falcons' Giorgio Tavecchio: Stays perfect in substitute duties

Tavecchio connected on a 40-yard field-goal attempt and succeeded on his lone point-after try during Sunday's 28-16 loss to Cleveland.

The Milan-born Tavecchio has been flawless since taking over for the injured Matt Bryant (hamstring) in Week 7, converting on all 13 of his combined attempts (5-for-5 on FGA, 8-for-8 on PATs). He's proven capable of connecting from long range -- four of his five field goals are from 40-plus yards, and two of the five from more than 50 yards out. The issue is his lack of volume, as Tavecchio's 1.7 attempts per game prohibit him from providing assured starting value on a weekly basis (Atlanta's 14 FGA as a team are tied for fifth fewest in the NFL). If Bryant is held out again in Week 11, Tavecchio will collect his fourth start of the season against a Cowboys team that's allowed 15 FGA all season, good for 10th-fewest in the league.
