Lions' Jalen Mills: Claimed by Detroit
The Lions claimed Mills off waivers from the Texans on Wednesday.
Mills was waived by the Texans on Tuesday, just three days after being signed off the practice squad to the active roster. Now that he's with the Lions, Mills will give the team a much-needed boost in an injury-depleted secondary that consists of Kerby Joseph (knee), Brian Branch (Achilles) and Thomas Harper (concussion).

Mills had already been elevated the maximum three times, so signing him to the active roster was the only way he could play in another game. The 22-year-old should help provide extra depth at safety, as Jaylen Reed (forearm) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

Mills signed with Houston earlier this month after spending much of the offseason as a free agent. The 31-year-old safety appeared in nine regular-season games for the Jets last season, recording 44 tackles (17 solo), six pass breakups, including one interception, and one forced fumble.

With C.J. Gardner-Johnson (knee), Jaylen Reed (ankle) and Jimmie Ward (foot) all dealing with injuries, the Texans bolstered their safety depth by signing Mills on Sunday. Mills ended the 2024 regular season on the Jets' injured reserve due to a collarbone injury after logging 44 tackles (17 solo), six pass defenses (one interception) and one forced fumble across nine games.

Mill won't return for the second half after sustaining a chest injury earlier in the game. He'll now look to get healthy in time for next Sunday's game against the Rams. Mills logged four tackles and an interception before exiting during the first half. The 30-year-old was a top tackle-getter for the team after stepping into the starting free-safety role Week 7, but his playing time has gone down slightly over the last two games. The safety who signed with the Jets' practice squad in September was playing in place of Chuck Clark (ankle) and Ashtyn Davis (head). Mills played in 17 regular-season games and on 443 defensive snaps for the Patriots in 2023, finishing with 45 tackles, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. Clark is on IR and can't return until Week 11 at the earliest, though Davis might come back as early as next week.
