Madison (knee) was waived by the Packers with a failed physical designation, Jason Wilde of ESPN.com reports.

  • Packers' Cole Madison: Moves to injured reserve

Madison (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

  • Packers' Cole Madison: Suffers torn ACL

Madison sustained a torn ACL during practice this week, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.

Madison will require season-ending surgery to address his ACL injury, so expect him to be placed on IR in the near future. The 2018 fifth-round pick sat out his entire rookie campaign for personal reasons related to working on mental health. He provided valuable interior depth for the Packers this season but did not ultimately suit up for game action. Yosh Nijman could be a candidate to be promoted from Green Bay's practice squad to replace Madison on the 53-man roster.

  • Packers' Cole Madison: Reinstated to roster

Madison was reinstated to the Packers' roster Monday as the team's offseason program begins, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

A 2018 fifth-round pick, all signs pointed towards Madison competing for a starting role at guard during his rookie campaign. However, Madison left the team due to a personal issue prior to training camp last June and ultimately sat out the entire 2018 season. That the Washington State product is present for the first day of offseason workouts is a welcome piece of news for the Packers, as Madison will provide competition and depth on the offensive line.

  • Packers' Cole Madison: May not return to football in 2019

Madison (personal) is uncertain to report to the Packers when the team begins its offseason program, Michael Cohen of The Athletic reports. "I don't think he's coming back," a source familiar with Madison's situation told Cohen. "At least he's not showing signs of it right now."

The Packers selected Madison in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the hope that he would compete for a starting role at guard during his inaugural training camp. The 24-year-old never had the chance to vie for the gig, however, after leaving the team at the conclusion of the offseason program last June for an undisclosed personal matter. According to the source, Madison is still dealing with emotional distress following the January 2018 suicide of close friend and Washington State teammate Tyler Hilinski. After tests on Hilinski's brain revealed that the quarterback had been suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), it's possible that Madison is still weighing the risk of playing football and exposing himself to a head injury that could have potential long-term implications on his health.
