Sanders appeared likely to operate as New York's starting kicker in 2026 after the team let Cade York go Tuesday, but after the team added Blake Grupe on Monday, Sanders will hit the open market. The kicker made two of three field-goal attempts and went 2-for-3 on PATs during the preseason, and he now will look for another opportunity elsewhere.

Jets' Jason Sanders: Still in competition for starting role
Sanders isn't a lock to secure the starting kicker role with the Jets this season, Antwan V. Staley of the New York Daily News reports.
Sanders was the last man standing at kicker with New York after the team waived Cade York on Tuesday, but the team claimed Blake Grupe off waivers Monday, complicating the situation again. Jets' Jason Sanders: No remaining competition as Jets kicker
Sanders appears to be the frontrunner to open the season as the Jets' kicker after Cade York was waived Tuesday, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports.
The Jets brought in both Sanders and York on one-year deals to compete for the kicking job. Sanders' longer record of NFL success gave him an early edge, and he ended up pulling away after converting both of his point-after attempts as well as field-goal attempts from 39 and 47 yards in the first two preseason contests. Jets special teams coach Chris Banjo said Tuesday that Sanders "has won the job" at placekicker, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Sanders contributed four of the Jets' 17 points, making his 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Cade York initially started the game for the Jets, missing a field goal in the second quarter. Sanders hasn't appeared in a regular-season game during the current campaign after injuring his hip in preseason. Sanders (hip), who remains on IR, was limited in practice Friday and is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that the team hasn't yet decided whether Sanders or Riley Patterson will handle placekicking duties this weekend in the event that both kickers are available, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Sanders has spent the entire regular season to date on IR, paving the way for Patterson to kick in all 15 of Miami's games so far. Patterson has been reliable in that span, converting 24 of 26 field-goal tries and all but one of his 32 PATs. Sanders remains under contract with the Dolphins through the 2026 campaign, which will be the final season of the five-year, $22 million deal he inked with the team in February 2021.
