49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Efficient with modest workload
McCaffrey rushed 10 times for 68 yards and brought in five of eight targets for 20 yards during the 49ers' 27-7 Week 1 win over the Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
Coming off a 2025 regular season where he was able to suit up for all 17 games while handling 413 total touches, McCaffrey saw a notable workload reduction to open the new campaign. Rookie third-round pick Kaelon Black actually outpaced McCaffrey by four carries, but it was the latter who edged out his new backfield mate for the team lead in rushing yards. McCaffrey flashed his trademark explosiveness when carrying the ball and should still helm the ground attack on the majority of weeks, although lopsided game scripts in either direction could lead to head coach Kyle Shanahan taking the opportunity to curtail his star running back's volume. McCaffrey will next take aim at what is expected to be a vulnerable Dolphins defense in a Week 2 matchup on Sunday, Sept. 20.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Not listed on injury report
McCaffrey (undisclosed) was not listed on the injury report the 49ers released Tuesday, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
McCaffrey's status has been a hot topic for nearly a month, particularly after it was reported in mid-August that he was dealing with some sort of "tightness." However, McCaffrey himself said in late August that he always planned to take it easy during training camp, and San Francisco's first injury report of the year confirms he is 100 percent. As such, it seems likely the star running back will fill his regular high-volume role when the 49ers kick off their season against the Rams in Australia.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Fully dressed for latest practice
McCaffrey (undisclosed) is in full uniform for the 49ers' practice session taking place Tuesday afternoon local time in Melbourne, Australia, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
McCaffrey wasn't spotted taking part in the early portion of practice Monday, so his presence on the field in full uniform Tuesday is a promising sign for his potential availability for the 49ers' season opener against the Rams. It's been a bit of a mysterious several weeks for McCaffrey, as he was described as dealing with "tightness" in early August and didn't play at all in the preseason while being an inconsistent participant in team drills. San Francisco's injury reports this week should shed some light on McCaffrey's status for the matchup against Los Angeles, but to this point he seems more likely than not to play in that contest.

49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Sitting out early drills Monday
McCaffrey (undisclosed) wasn't participating in drills in the early portion of the 49ers' practice early Monday in Australia, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Though McCaffrey wasn't on the field for the open portion of practice, it's possible that he fit in some work behind the scenes. San Francisco will post its first injury report of 2026 later Monday, when the extent of McCaffrey's practice participation will be revealed as the 49ers gear up for their season opener against the Rams on Thursday.
