Jaguars' Rodney Gunter: Heart condition forces retirement
Gunter (illness) announced via his personal Twitter account Sunday that he is stepping away from football due to a serious heart condition.
Gunter has been diagnosed with an enlarged aorta, a condition which would put his health at serious risk if he were to play football before undergoing an operation. However, the 28-year-old does not currently meet the requirements needed for surgery, which would offer a 50 percent chance of allowing him to retake the field if undergone. As such, Gunter is left with no option but to hang up his cleats. Gunter was expected to play a depth role with the Jaguars in 2020, and across his last five years in Arizona the defensive lineman notched a total of 126 tackles (86 solo) and 11 sacks.

Jaguars' Rodney Gunter: Placed on NFI list
Gunter was placed on the active/non-football illness list Saturday.
Gunter is currently projected to help provide depth on the Jaguars' defensive line in 2020. It is unclear exactly what issue he is dealing with, but he will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. In his absence at camp, Adam Gotsis, Brian Price, Doug Costin, DaVon Hamilton and Dontavius Russell will all have a bigger opportunity to make an impression on the line.

Jaguars' Rodney Gunter: Headed to Jacksonville
The Jaguars and Gunter (toe) agreed to terms on a three-year deal Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Gunter arrives in Jacksonville after spending the past five seasons of his career in Arizona. The 28-year-old played in 13 games in 2019 before a toe injury forced him to injured reserve. Gunter racked up 31 tackles (20 solo) and three sacks across 622 defensive snaps last year. He'll look to battle Abry Jones and Taven Bryan for a starting spot on the interior of the defensive line in 2020.

Cardinals' Rodney Gunter: Season over
Gunter (toe) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
It was originally believed that Gunter had an ankle injury, but further reports have revealed it's a toe issue that will end the 27-year-old's season early, forcing him to miss the first games of his career. Gunter finished the year with 31 tackles (20 solo) and three sacks, and he'll be an unrestricted free agent in March.

Cardinals' Rodney Gunter: Leaves with ankle injury
Gunter was forced out of Sunday's game against the Steelers with an ankle injury, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Gunter managed to record his third sack of the season before exiting the contest. If his injury is serious and he's forced to miss Week 15's game against the Browns, Gunter's streak of consecutive active games will end at 77 games.

Cardinals' Rodney Gunter: Staying in Arizona
Gunter re-signed with the Cardinals on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Gunter will stay in Arizona for a fifth season, but he may have lost his starting job in March when the team signed Darius Philon away from the Chargers. In 64 NFL games, Gunter has 95 tackles and eight sacks, with 10 of his 25 starts occurring in 2018. He likely will play defensive end in a 3-4 scheme under new coordinator Vance Joseph.

Gunter (foot) is listed as questionable for Sunday's matchup with the Rams, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Gunter was unable to practice Wednesday, but he managed to get in limited practices Thursday and Friday. The Delaware State product hasn't missed a game this season. Gunter has also logged at least 40 defensive snaps in six of the last seven games. If Gunter misses time Sunday, Vincent Valentine would likely see those snaps.

Gunter was understandably absent from practice all week due to the death of his father, but is reportedly on track to suit up for Sunday's tilt against the Raiders. If the defensive tackle is able to play, expect him to serve his usual rotational role.

Gunter totaled 17 tackles (11 solo) and one sack in 16 games with the Cardinals in 2017.
Gunter's production in 2017 was similar to his first two seasons in the league as he remains in a reserve role in the defensive line rotation. The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2018 and appears slated to serve as starting nose tackle Corey Peters' backup once again.
