Browns' James Proche: Contributes as returner
Proche played one snap on offense and returned three punts for 25 yards in Sunday's 18-13 win over the Jaguars.
After beginning the season on the practice squad, Proche was signed to the 53-man roster Saturday. In addition to the punt returns, he also lined up as a kickoff returner after Pierre Strong (hamstring) left the game early in the third quarter. Strong's injury plus David Bell's hip injury could lead to a bigger role for Proche.

Proche signed with the Browns' practice squad Wednesday.
Proche failed to make the Browns' 53-man roster after finishing the preseason with seven catches (on seven targets) for 60 yards and one touchdown. The 2020 sixth-round wide receiver appeared in 10 regular-season games for the Browns last season, though he wasn't able to record a catch on five targets.

The Browns terminated Proche's contract Tuesday, Kelsey Russo of the team's official site reports.
Proche, who had been in line for a return job, was cut, not waived. That means he's not subject to waivers and can sign with any team immediately, which potentially leaves a return to the Browns on the table.

Browns' James Proche: Re-signs with Cleveland
The Browns have re-signed Proche.
While Proche didn't catch any of his five targets in 10 games with Cleveland during the 2023 regular season, the 2020 sixth-rounder did contribute on special teams by returning 22 punts for 197 yards as well as one kickoff for 19 yards. Now that he's back in the fold, Proche will have a chance to retain his depth WR/special teams role with the Browns in 2024.

Proche returned one punt for two yards in Saturday's 45-14 wild-card playoff loss to Houston.
Proche was a midseason acquisition and took over the punt-return duties after Cleveland traded Donovan Peoples-Jones to the Lions. Proche rarely played on offense outside of a Week 18 meaningless game. His primary body of work over four NFL seasons is that of returner, and he enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

Browns' James Proche: Special teams only in loss
Proche returned two punts for 30 yards and did not play on offense in Sunday's 36-19 loss to the Rams in Week 13.
By the end of the game, Proche was sitting fourth on the depth chart, but he never stepped on the field with the offense. Amari Cooper sustained a concussion in the second quarter and left the game, but head coach Kevin Stefanski opted to get by with a trio of Elijah Moore, Cedric Tillman and David Bell. Proche has played a total of nine snaps with the offense and been targeted once through nine games.

Browns' James Proche: No run on offense
Proche did not play on offense and had three punt returns for 37 yards in Sunday's 13-10 win over the Steelers.
Proche, who is operating as the No. 5 wideout while Marquise Goodwin (concussion) is unavailable, has taken hold as the primary punt returner. He had a long return of 21 yards that put Cleveland's offense in business on the Pittsburgh side of the field in the third quarter, but an interception ended that threat. In three games on the active roster, Proche has one target and 10 punt returns for 92 yards.

He was in the lineup for a second straight week as the Browns were without Marquise Goodwin (concussion) and David Bell (knee), but Proche was on the field for just three offensive snaps. Sunday's target was his first of the season.
