The 49ers released Gay from their practice squad Tuesday.
Gay stepped in as the 49ers' kicker for the team's last two games while Eddy Pineiro (hamstring) was sidelined and went a perfect 8-for-8 on kicks (four field goals, four extra points). The 49ers' decision to part ways with Gay signals that Pineiro is healthy coming out of the team's Week 14 bye and ready to handle kicking duties Sunday versus the Titans.

49ers' Matt Gay: Joins 49ers' practice squad
The 49ers signed Gay to the practice squad Wednesday.
Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Monday that Eddy Pineiro was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain following Sunday's win at Arizona and is considered "week-to-week," per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. The 49ers subsequently tried out five kickers between Tuesday and Wednesday before deciding to roll the dice with Gay, who was waived by the Commanders on Monday. Gay thus will be elevated from the practice squad to handle kicking duties Monday against the Panthers if Pineiro sits out the contest.

Gay is signing with the 49ers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
The Commanders waived Gay on Monday after he missed two field-goal attempts in Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Dolphins. He made just 13 of 19 attempts for Washington this season, but he was at least perfect on PATs, and he apparently impressed the 49ers during a workout this week. Both of Gay's misses came from 51 and 56 yards in the second and fourth quarters, respectively, but they turned out to be crucial misses in what was a close affair in Madrid, Spain. It was the second time this season that the veteran kicker missed two field goals in a game, and he is now 4-for-9 on field-goal attempts from 50-plus yards. Gay is now 13-for-19 on field-goal attempts and 22-for-22 on extra-point tries through 10 regular-season games.
