49ers' Jake Tonges: Signs extension
Tonges (foot) is signing a two-year, $8 million contract to stay with the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Tonges was scheduled for restricted free agency and presumably would've gotten some kind of tender if the two sides hadn't worked out this deal. He suffered a plantar fascia injury during the playoff loss at Seattle in January, but it's thought to be less serious than the Achilles tear that George Kittle suffered a week earlier. Tonges thus stands a chance to start Week 1.

49ers' Jake Tonges: Has plantar fascia injury
Tonges suffered a plantar fascia injury in his foot during this past Saturday's divisional-round loss at Seattle, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Tonges flashed at times during the 2025 campaign when George Kittle was sidelined for a variety of injuries, totaling a 40-366-5 line on 55 targets in 19 games, including two postseason contests. He made an early exit in the third quarter of the divisional round and wasn't able to return, and now the nature of his health concern is known. Tonges has a three-week recovery on tap, so he should be fully healthy before the 49ers need to make a decision on his restricted free-agent tender in March.

49ers' Jake Tonges: Suffers foot injury
Tonges is questionable to return to Saturday's divisional-round game against the 49ers due to a foot injury, Eric Williams of NFL on FOX reports.
Tonges suffered a non-contact injury early in the third quarter. He was able to hobble off the field and was spotted running up and down the sideline. Tonges was already filling in for the injured George Kittle (Achilles), so the 49ers could have a depleted tight end room for the rest of this matchup.

49ers' Jake Tonges: Replaces injured Kittle on Sunday
Tonges caught one of three targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 23-19 wild-card win over the Eagles.
After top tight end George Kittle exited the game in the second quarter with what is believed to be a torn Achilles tendon, the 49ers opened up more playing time for Tonges to begin the second half. Tonges has operated as San Francisco's third tight end on the depth chart for most of the season, but he's leapfrogged blocking specialist Luke Farrell whenever Kittle has missed time. The 25-year-old Tonges proved to be a viable receiving threat when called upon, averaging 4.8 receptions and 44.8 yards with three touchdowns scored in the six games that Kittle was inactive during the regular season. Assuming he's called upon to replace Kittle in the divisional-round matchup versus the Seahawks next weekend, Tonges should make a fine value play in DFS.

49ers' Jake Tonges: Stuck on ST with Kittle back
Tonges logged 11 snaps on special teams and was not used on offense in Saturday's 13-3 loss to the Seahawks.
George Kittle returned from a one-game absence Saturday, effectively pushing Tonges back down to third on San Francisco's depth chart for Week 18. Blocking TE Luke Farrell logged eight snaps behind Kittle and was not targeted in the regular-season finale. Tonges emerged in 2025 with a 34-293-5 receiving line that was generated primarily while filling in for Kittle at various points of the campaign. Assuming Kittle did not suffer a setback, Tonges will remain a non-factor for the start of San Francisco's playoff run in the wild-card round.

49ers' Jake Tonges: In line for expanded role Sunday
Tonges is poised for a bigger role in the 49ers offense Sunday versus the Bears due to George Kittle (ankle) being inactive, Briana Jeannel of the team's official site reports.
Kittle is missing his first contest since he sustained a mid-to-low ankle sprain last Monday at Indianapolis. When Kittle was sidelined in Weeks 2-6 due to a full tear of his hamstring that occurred in the season opener, Tonges was the primary pass-catching TE between himself and Luke Farrell, with the former accruing a 22-209-2 line on 31 targets during that span. Tonges thus is about as good of a streaming option remaining in the midst of fantasy championship weekend with just two games left in the Week 17 slate.

49ers' Jake Tonges: Cashes in prime opportunity on SNF
Tonges corralled seven of nine targets for 60 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 42-38 win over the Bears.
Tonges got the spot-start in place of George Kittle (ankle) on Sunday Night Football and took full advantage of the opportunity. The 25-year-old Tonges posted his best receiving line as a pro while leading the 49ers in targets and receptions in the primetime win. Savvy fantasy managers would have gotten ahead of this performance after monitoring the backup's role elevation when Kittle missed time earlier this season. Kittle's status for next week's matchup against Seattle -- which will determine the No. 1 seed in the NFC -- remains up in the air, but Tonges would retain his vaunted streaming status in fantasy if the former remains sidelined in Week 18.

49ers' Jake Tonges: Steps in for injured starter Monday
Tonges caught one of two targets for seven yards in Monday's 48-27 win over the Colts.
George Kittle (ankle) suffered an ankle injury in the second half of Monday's win, opening the door for Tonges to record his first reception since Week 8. The severity of Kittle's injury isn't yet known, but Tonges would be in line for an expanded role should the Niners' starting tight end miss Sunday's tilt against the Bears. Tonges started in place of an injured Kittle back in Weeks 2 through 6, averaging 4.4 receptions and 41.8 yards per game with two touchdowns scored over that span. Fantasy managers in deeper formats in need of tight end help for Week 17 may want to take a flyer on Tonges in the event Kittle is ruled out for Sunday Night Football.
