Derrick Deese: Gets cut loose
Deese was waived by the Lions on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Deese spent time on Detroit's practice squad last season and signed a reserve/future deal with the team in January. However, the Lions have decided to go in a different direction, signing two other tight ends Wednesday, Darrell Daniels and Daniel Helm. Deese will now work to earn a new opportunity elsewhere.

Deese (undisclosed) has been removed from the active/NFI list after passing his physical, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Deese's time on the active/NFI list was just one day, and he now looks ready for full-time action during traing camp. He is looking to earn a spot providing depth at tight end for the Lions in the upcoming season.

Deese was placed on the active/non-football injury list by the Lions on Thursday.

The Lions signed Deese to a reserve/future contract Wednesday.
Deese joined the Lions' practice squad after failing to make the team's initial 53-man roster, but he was cut again a week later. The undrafted tight end out of San Jose State caught 47 passes for 730 yards and four scores during his final collegiate campaign and, after signing a new contract, will have a chance to compete for a roster spot with the Lions throughout the offseason.

Deese rejoined the Lions via the practice squad after being waived ahead of the 53-man roster deadline. The 6-foot-4 tight end originally signed with Detroit in May as an undrafted free agent out of San Jose State, where he hauled in 47 passes for 730 yards and four scores during his final collegiate season.

Deese signed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent in May and has been out with an injury since mid-June. The San Jose State product is fighting to secure a depth role, as he's one of the seven tight ends fighting for a spot behind T.J. Hockenson.
