Fellow tight end Jake Hausmann was also waived Tuesday, and it appears the Giants are content to move forward with a combination of fourth-round selection Daniel Bellinger and free-agent acquisitions Ricky Seals-Jones and Jordan Akins at TE.

John (ankle) faces added competition for a roster spot following the Giants' selection of Daniel Bellinger in the recent NFL Draft, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
The 6-foot-7, 220-pounder landed on IR last season, but now that he's presumably past the ankle issue that landed him there, John will look to secure a depth tight end slot this coming season. Also in the mix behind projected starter Ricky Seals-Jones are Jordan Akins, Bellinger, Chris Myarick and Jake Hausmann.

The Giants placed John (ankle) on injured reserve Tuesday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
The timing of John's placement on IR effectively rules him out for the 2021 campaign. However, Duggan notes John's issue isn't necessarily of season-ending severity, so it's possible the tight end reaches an injury settlement. If that happens, he could be a candidate for the Giants' practice squad.

John suffered a lower leg or ankle injury in Sunday's preseason game against the Browns, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
John began to run a route but was only able to take a few steps before grabbing his lower leg. Though there has been no official diagnosis, the noncontact nature of the injury is concerning. John spent a large portion of the 2020 season on the Giants' practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract to remain with the team in the offseason.
