Benson (knee) reverted to the Cardinals' injured reserve list Tuesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Benson underwent surgery in early October last year for a meniscus injury he suffered in the Cardinals' Week 4 loss to the Seahawks, but after returning the running back could never get right and he had trouble staying on the practice field. The 24-year-old's struggles, combined with the Cardinals' crowded running back room, caused him to be placed on waivers to begin the week, and there were no takers. If he can fix his knee troubles he could negotiate an injury settlement in an attempt to find another team to play for in 2026.

Trey Benson: Cut by Cardinals
Benson (knee) was waived/injured by the Cardinals on Monday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Benson has been in and out of practice throughout training camp due to lingering issues with his surgically repaired left knee that kept him sidelined after Week 4 last season. Arizona made two notable additions to its backfield this offseason in 2026 third overall pick Jeremiyah Love (ankle) and free-agent addition Tyler Allgeier and still retains long-time starter James Conner (foot). Assuming Benson clears waivers Tuesday, he'll revert to injured reserve.

Benson (knee) has not been present for any portion of the Cardinals' previous two full-squad practices this week, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
After stretching with the team ahead of Monday's walkthrough practice, Benson hasn't since been seen by the media. He's been dealing with the knee injury all summer after missing the final 14 weeks of the 2025 campaign with an injury to the same knee. Unable to practice much or play so far this summer, Benson could be on the outside looking in for a roster spot, considering he doesn't play special teams.

Benson has been in and out of practice since his left knee flared up two weeks ago, missing Thursday's preseason game at Las Vegas in the process. With rookie first-round pick Jeremiyah Love being diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain this weekend, Benson has a chance to stake a claim on the RB depth chart behind offseason addition Tyler Allgeier for as long as Love is sidelined. As did fellow RB James Conner, who is bouncing back from an ankle injury. Per Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site, while the returning backs are ready for camp, the team plans to "be smart" with them out of the gate. Looking ahead, Benson will look to secure slotting in a crowded Arizona backfield that also includes Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier, as well as Conner. However, unless injuries hit, Benson doesn't have a path to steady volume in the offense as Week 1 approaches.

Cardinals' Trey Benson: More competition in backfield
Benson (knee) faces even more competition in the Arizona backfield after the Cardinals used the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 Draft on Jeremiyah Love on Thursday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Along with Love, who projects to vault right to the top of the depth chart at running back, the Cardinals also signed Tyler Allgeier and restructured James Conner's contract over the offseason. Benson has never played a single regular-season snap on special teams in his career but may have to learn if he's going to stick in Arizona. The more likely outcome may be that Benson is traded to a team in need of backfield depth before Week 1. The 2024 third-round pick has a career 92-451-1 rushing line, good for a strong 4.9 yards per carry.

Benson could potentially be the odd man out of a big-bodied 1-2 punch featuring Allgeier and Conner, as Donnie Druin of SI.com reports, though Benson's big-play potential could make him effective in a change-of-pace role. The 2024 third-round pick had a big opportunity last year following Conner's season-ending foot injury, but Benson then suffered a meniscus injury in Week 4, ultimately missing the rest of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery at the beginning of October. While the exact split of Arizona's 2026 backfield remains to be seen, Allgeier and Conner have established themselves as more consistent rushers than Benson, who will need to prove his health and then compete for a roster spot under new head coach Mike LaFleur.
