NEWARK, N.J. -- It's deja vu at the Stanley Cup Final. For the second consecutive game the Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils went to overtime, tied at one, making it the first time since 1951 that the first two games of a Stanley Cup Final went to overtime.
The Kings took a 1-0 lead into the third period thanks to Drew Doughty's end-to-end rush in the first period. The Devils were able to get the equalizer early in the third period when Ryan Carter scored his fifth goal of the playoffs on a deflection right in front of Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.
Back in 1951 the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs played a five-game series that featured an overtime game every night, with the Maple Leafs winning four of them to capture the Cup.
The Devils had a chance to win it right at the buzzer, but Ilya Kovalchuk's shot rang off the crossbar.
Saturday's game is also the 25th overtime game of the 2012 postseason, which is third all-time. Only the 2001 (26) and 1993 (28) postseasons have had more.
