Just because, there are the all the faces in new places who scored goals in the opening weekend of the NHL, in case you needed some kind of refresher of who is where now.
• In a not incredibly surprising development given his history, Red Wings defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo was injured on Monday night and is going to be out for a while. When your defense is already thinner than Paulina Gretzky, that's really not a good sign.
Naturally, the Wings are trying to do something about that by signing another defenseman. Ken Holland didn't tell Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press who the veteran defenseman is -- and it's undoubtedly not an impact player, at least at this point -- but that a deal could be signed as soon as Tuesday. In addition to Colaiacovo's injury, Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl are banged up at the moment, too. (Detroit Free Press)
• When the Hurricanes make their home debut Tuesday night, they'll look a bit different than they did in the season-opening loss to the Panthers on Saturday.
While everything was clearly not right in the 5-1 loss, coach Kirk Muller says the moves aren't necessarily because of what they did or did not do in that first game, just that they continue to experiment trying to find the right combinations. I guess that's to be expected when there were only five days for training camp. (News & Observer)
• Tom Gagliardi bought the Dallas Stars not too long ago so maybe that would explain why not all the employees in the building recognize him.
Gagliardi, who was on his way to a party in the arena to celebrate the return of the NHL from its labor impasse, had his own type of impasse when trying to board an elevator. The elevator attendant asked to see his ticket and it wasn't until somebody else told the attendant who the man was that he was allowed to go on his way. (Dallas Morning News)
• The Blue Jackets were awful last season, there's no way getting around that. But as a testament to the love fans have for the sport, Columbus' arena was jam packed for their opener on Monday night. Playing the Red Wings probably didn't hurt but still, it was a great response, just as we've seen across the NHL.
Something we haven't seen is what the players did on the ice before the game. That all wore sweaters with the No. 1 and "Thank You Fans" on the name plate. A nice gesture I suppose, but at this point let's all just forget the lockout happened and move on. The less reminders the better. (Blue Jackets Extra)
