Reserves Crump, Geno score career highs in Georgia win
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) On a night when his veteran superstars were not performing to their potential, Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox found offensive firepower elsewhere.
Freshman Tyree Crump and senior Kenny Paul Geno both came off the bench to score career highs in leading Georgia to an 86-72 win over Morehouse Wednesday night.
Crump scored 16 points, hitting every shot he took, and Geno scored 15. He came into the game with three points in the first six games for the Bulldogs.
Early in the first half, Fox substituted for leading scorers Yante Maten and J.J. Frazier, but it was not to give his freshmen minutes.
''That was a conscious move to get my superstars to play better basketball,'' he explained. ''To whom much is given, much is expected. As the two lead dogs, they need to play like the lead dogs when the ball goes up.''
Maten scored a season-low 14 points, but it was still his 23rd straight game in double figures. Frazier missed all five three-pointers he attempted and nine of 12 shots overall to finish with six points. Another Georgia freshman also had a career high: Jordan Harris with 11.
Tyrius Walker led Morehouse (4-3) with 24 points. Jordan Wallace scored 13 and Martravious Little had 12.
Geno said he was not concerned about his low offensive production so far this year.
''All I care about is representing this G,'' he said, pointing to his jersey. ''All I care about is winning. I do what coach asks me to do. I got in a good rhythm and my shot felt good. They found me and I was open.''
''Geno played a really good game,'' Maten said. ''He took a charge and was taking the right shots and helping us on defense.''
Geno scored nine points in nine minutes in the first half and Georgia (5-2) led 36-30 at halftime.
The Maroon Tigers, members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, made just one of eight 3-point attempts before intermission.
Georgia led 56-46 with 11:17 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Crump, who shot 4 of 4 from the floor, 2 of 2 from long distance and made all six of his free throws.
RED CROSS
Georgia junior Juwan Parker sat out the Morehouse game with soreness in his Achilles. Parker missed last year with an Achilles injury. Junior college transfer Pape Diatta of Dakar, Senegal, got his first career start in Parker's place.
DOUBLE DUTY
Morehouse Athletic Director Andre Patillo was on site doing his duties as an evaluator of officials for the Southeastern Conference.
