Miami running backs dominated the team’s first scrimmage of the preseason. Senior Mike James ran for 137 yards and 3 TDs, including one on a 51-yard run. He also added a 37-yard catch for a TD. Freshman Duke Johnson had three TDs on nine carries. The Miami Herald’s Susan Miller Degnan had the report.
Virginia Tech had a busy weekend on Twitter. Coach Frank Beamer’s personal website announced that incoming freshman Der’Woun Greene will move from WR to CB. The school’s account had the news that OT Nick Acree injured his knee during the team’s scrimmage and will have an MRI Monday. And the equipment room unveiled a new helmet design featuring turkey tracks. QB Logan Thomas is not a fan.
The UNC academic scandal took another bizarre twist when the News & Observer’s Dan Kane revealed that a mock transcript on the school’s website may actually belong to former player Julius Peppers.
While Penn State players made up their minds about transferring, the first player to decide to leave was practicing in Raleigh. NC State S Tim Buckley talked to the Associated Press about his decision to leave.
Phillip Sims met with Alabama coach Nick Saban before transferring to Virginia and told him he’d be leaving even if Saban had named him the starting quarterback. Family issues brought Sims back to Virginia, and he’s in the middle of a competition with Michael Rocco for the Cavaliers QB job. Michael Phillips of the Richmond Times-Dispatch spoke to Sims.
