Rumors can grow legs and turn into centipedes? Here are the best quotes from the week's coach press conferences and ACC Teleconference.
Boston College coach Frank Spaziani on QB Chase Rettig’s 441-yard day in the opener: “We showed a tremendous amount of improvement, albeit with a sampling of one. Still, we had no samplings of it last year.”
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on QB Tajh Boyd’s trouble keeping his helmet on: “I don’t know how we could secure his helmet any more without cutting his circulation off … It was a real learning experience. We learned that you’d better have your backup ready to go. When we’re on defense, we’ll make sure Cole (Stoudt) is getting throws, getting loose.”
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher on how the team adjusts to DE Brandon Jenkins’ season-ending injury: “We won’t make any scheme changes … You don’t ever fully replace a guy like him, but Tank Carradine comes close. … We’ve always thought we had 1a, 1b and 1c defense ends in Brandon, Bjoern (Werner) and Tank. It just depends on what style of player you like.”
Maryland coach Randy Edsall on DE Joe Vellano: “It doesn’t surprise me that he plays well because of the way he practices. He works hard at being good. His tipped ball interception came from playing every play like it’s the last one you’ll ever play.”
NC State coach Tom O’Brien on the loss to Tennessee: “Five big plays on defense accounted for half the yards. We had five turnovers on offense. I know you can’t take 10 plays out of the game, but those 10 plays explain the loss.”
Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe on facing North Carolina: “Their defense shutting Elon out is just as impressive as their scoring 62 points, if not more so.”
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson on QB Tevin Washington’s interception in overtime: “He was trying to make a play. It was the same play we scored on earlier. They actually had a bust on defense. He just happened to flush out to the side where all their defenders were.”
North Carolina coach Larry Fedora on Wake Forest’s offensive line problems: “I wouldn’t say their offensive line is a weakness. I don’t consider them young. They may not have experience, but they’ve developed in Jim Grobe’s system.”
Virginia coach Mike London on being rumored as a possible hire for Penn State last offseason: “Thanks to Desmond Howard for throwing it out there like that … That always happens. There are always people throwing your name out there and then it grows legs, and all of a sudden, it’s a centipede.”
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer on ACC Linebacker of the Week Jack Tyler: “He had an outstanding game. He’s not a huge size guy, but he brings a big punch with him. He usually ends up where the football is.”
Duke coach David Cutcliffe on the team getting over the Florida International win: “I’ll tell you what: If anyone gets complacent they are going to fail in life. That’s all I can tell you.”
Miami coach Al Golden on whether the team’s win over Boston College met expectations: “No. We dropped seven balls and had way more mental errors than I ever thought we would. That’s not our expectation. Our expectation is that we’ll be a smart, disciplined team, and nine penalties didn’t meet that.”
