Tennessee smothers Alabama: No. 14 Volunteers take down No. 6 Crimson Tide behind suffocating defense

No. 14 Tennessee handed No. 6 Alabama its second consecutive loss on Saturday, as the Volunteers rode their suffocating defense to a 26-10 Third Saturday in October rivalry win inside Neyland Stadium. It's the first time since 2007 that the Crimson Tide have dropped consecutive regular-season games.

The Volunteers (6-1, 3-1 SEC) snapped a four-game home losing streak against ranked opponents with the win, which was their third straight home victory in the rivalry. They have Jim Knowles' unit to thank.

Tennessee's first-year defensive coordinator kept the Crimson Tide's explosive offense in a perpetual state of misery. Playing without injured star receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, Alabama (5-2, 3-2) never found a rhythm, as it struggled beneath the weight of turnovers, penalties and a devastating inability to convert in short-yardage situations.

Sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell committed two turnovers in Alabama's first three possessions. Though he eventually settled down, the Crimson Tide's only touchdown came one play after a Tennessee interception gave Alabama a short field.

Sustaining drives against the Volunteers proved impossible for the Crimson Tide, who finished with just 201 total yards while averaging only 3.7 yards per play.

Making his first career home start, Tennessee quarterback George MacIntyre completed 21 of 31 passes for 197 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. However, the offensive MVP for Tennessee was running back DeSean Bishop, who kept the chains moving on a fourth-quarter touchdown drive that bled 9:32 off the clock.

Bishop surpassed 100 yards rushing for the fourth time this season and for the third consecutive time in SEC play as he totaled 159 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.

Tennessee cements its identity

Early in coach Josh Heupel's tenure, the Volunteers were known for high-octane offense. But two of Heupel's best teams over his six-year tenure have taken on a different identity. The 2024 playoff team was led by its defense and run game. These 2026 Vols are looking quite similar.

Heupel is a former Heisman runner-up quarterback, but it's his ability to adapt and embrace alternative routes to success that have made him a good SEC head coach. His decision to fire longtime defensive coordinator Tim Banks after a lackluster 2025 season for the Vols' defense needed to be followed by a home run hire.

It was.

Former Oklahoma State, Ohio State and Penn State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is crafting one of the nation's best defenses at just the right time. With inexperience at quarterback, the Volunteers aren't in position to play a high-octane style. But they showed on Saturday that they are plenty well-equipped to play smashmouth football.

Line of scrimmage struggles

Alabama's combined 3 for 16 mark on third and fourth downs served as one illustration of its lackluster physicality in a grueling affair. Perhaps no unit faltered more glaringly than the offensive line. Tennessee racked up 10 tackles for loss and five sacks as the Crimson Tide struggled to protect Keelon Russell.

The Bama defensive line had problems, too. A week after Dwight Phillips Jr. totaled 120 yards rushing for Georgia, Bishop tallied 150 for Tennessee, becoming the third SEC running back this year to surpass 100 yards rushing against Alabama. The Crimson Tide also failed to fluster young Tennessee quarterback George MacIntyre, who was sacked just once while completing 21 of 31 passes.

Playoff implications

Alabama's playoff hopes are not shot. Not by a longshot. The Crimson Tide still have a 53.4% chance to reach the 12-team field, according to the CBS Sports College Football Playoff Forecaster. The road ahead isn't overly daunting, either. Alabama hosts a struggling Texas A&M team next week before traveling to face a flawed LSU squad on Nov. 7 following a bye week.

The Tide close with Vanderbilt, Chattanooga and Auburn. Though this season is proving that anyone in the SEC can be vulnerable in a given week, Alabama absolutely has a playoff path ahead. It won't face another defense as strong as Tennessee's unit.

Tennessee now has a 51.2% chance of reaching the CFP, according to the CBS Sports CFP Forecaster. Trips to South Carolina, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt are still ahead, as are home games with Kentucky and LSU. But the Volunteers have a little margin for error to work with. A 4-1 finish over their final five games would likely be good enough to earn the Vols a spot in the field.

Tennessee makes a statement

Tennessee just bled over nine minutes of fourth quarter clock on a long, grueling, methodical touchdown march that ate most of the time Alabama would need to stage a comeback. DeSean Bishop converted on a critical fourth-and-inches with less than six minutes remaining to keep the clock churning. Then, he scored from 5 yards out to make it 26-10 Tennessee with 3:17 remaining.

Huge penalty against Tennessee

Tennessee receiver Mike Matthews was flagged for a blind-side block on Alabama star Bray Hubbard, negating a 34-yard run from DeSean Bishop. Hubbard needed attention from the Crimson Tide training staff after that shot before walking off under his own power. That could prove costly as the Volunteers try and build separation.

Can Alabama's offense come to life?

End 3Q: Tennessee 19, Alabama 10

It's been a nightmare day for the Alabama offense between turnovers, penalties and failed short-yardage situations. But the Crimson Tide have the football trailing just 19-10 entering the fourth quarter, and they still have Keelon Russell. Since a pair of first quarter turnovers, the sophomore has settled down and looked fine. The problems have been more with Alabama's offensive line struggling to protect him against Tennessee's swarming rush.

Penalties mounting for Alabama

The crowd at Neyland Stadium is making its presence felt. Alabama was all set to go for it on a fourth-and-1 from its own 34 until a false start penalty left the Crimson Tide with little choice but to punt. Bama has now been flagged seven times for 53 yards. It was also hit with a delay of game on that series. Alabama won at Kentucky and at Mississippi State, but Tennessee's crowd and defense are proving to be far more daunting challenge to navigate. The absence of star receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is further complicating matters for the Crimson Tide.

Tennessee's first touchdown

5:05 3Q: Tennessee 19, Alabama 10

It took nearly 40 minutes, but Tennessee finally scored its first touchdown. DeSean Bishop finished the drive with a bruising 5-yard touchdown run. He was a force on that series with runs of 6, 3, and 20 yards before the 5-yard scoring scamper. George MacIntyre also went 3 for 3 on the series and appears to be settling in.

Injury report

Alabama starting corner Zabien Brown has been ruled out for the rest of the game after suffering an injury in the second quarter, per the ABC broadcast. Losing Brown is no minor issue for the Crimson Tide. He's a veteran stalwart and all-SEC type of guy on the back end of their defense.

Tennessee left tackle David Sanders has returned after dealing with injury in the first half.

Bama's fourth-down gamble doesn't hit

Alabama went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Tennessee 40-yard line on its opening possession of the second half. After burning a timeout, the Volunteers stuffed Daniel Hill for no gain. The Crimson Tide made the right call by going for it there, but they are now 0 for 2 in fourth-and-short situations as the Vols' defense continues coming up with big plays.

Alabama feeling the absence of Ryan Coleman-Williams

With star receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams out due to injury, Alabama's passing game was in tatters during the first half. Lotzeir Brooks and Rico Scott have been productive, reliable targets for sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell this season. But they were mostly MIA in the first half as Russell went 6 for 12 with 40 yards, an interception and a fumble. Sort has one catch for 20 yards, and Brooks does not have a catch.

Tennessee's defense dominates first half

Half: Tennessee 12, Alabama 10

First-year Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles earned his hefty paycheck in the first half, as Tennessee held Alabama to just 93 total yards and only 3.3 yards per play. The Crimson Tide went 0 for 7 on third downs, 0 for 1 on fourth down and committed three turnovers.

Despite all that, Tennessee leads just 12-10 after settling for four field goals in the first half. With sophomore George MacIntyre making just his second career start at quarterback, the Volunteers failed to capitalize on the dominance of their defense. Alabama will get the football to begin the third quarter.

Teams trade mistakes

Tennessee's defense forced another Alabama punt, but then disaster struck. After the punt returner cleared the area, Volunteers freshman Brayden Rouse inexplicably reached down as if he was going to scoop the football up. The ball ended up grazing his foot, allowing Alabama to recover the ball at Tennessee's 23-yard line.

Bama then let the Volunteers off the hook when Daniel Hill fumbled on a fourth-and-1 carry, returning the football to Tennessee with no blood drawn.

Tennessee settles for fourth FG

5:19 2Q: Tennessee 12, Alabama 7

Tennessee just went for its longest drive since the game-opening series to give its defense some well-earned rest. Once again, the Volunteers settled for a field goal, bringing Cooper Ranvier's tally to 4 for 4 for the day. A 20-yard, tackler-dodging run from DeSean Bishop was the highlight, and the Vols also converted a couple third-and-shorts to keep the chains moving.

Smart call by Kalen DeBoer leads to Bama TD

Faced with a fourth-and-1 at his own 44-yard line, Kalen DeBoer opted to punt. It was the right call in the moment, and it was proven right just one play later, when Ivan Taylor pulled down an interception and ran it to Tennessee's 14-yard line. Rad Jackson probably should have caught the pass.

Just a few plays later, Keelon Russell took off from a clean pocket for a 19-yard touchdown run to bring Alabama within 9-7. Turnovers have been a key story of the game for both teams. But Alabama was just able to convert one into a touchdown, which the Volunteers have not yet done.

Penalty problems plague Tennessee

Tennessee committed three false start penalties in the span of two plays to sabotage a drive. A 13-yard connection between MacIntyre and Mike Matthews was basically wiped out by those three blunders. The Vols' defense is playing well, but it's going to be hard to sustain that if the Tennessee offense doesn't take some more time off the clock.

Vols dominate opening quarter

End 1Q: Tennessee 9, Alabama 0

It took four possessions, but Alabama's offense finally picked up a first down on a 17-yard Daniel Hill run. The Crimson Tide will be facing a third-and-5 to begin the second quarter after a nightmare start for their offense. Despite two early turnovers deep in Tennessee territory, the Crimson Tide trail just 9-0. Tennessee settled for three field goals and had a three-and-out. Aside from a strong early drive, the Volunteers haven't been able to much offensively.

Alabama has been in this position before. It dealt with a horrible start at Kentucky in Week 2 before coming back to win convincingly.

Tennessee's offense not capitalizing

Tennessee's offense is struggling to take advantage of a dominant start from its defense. The Vols went three-and-out in a matter of seconds after their defense forced Keelon Russell's second turnover.

Russell fired a wayward ball over the middle that landed in the arms of Dejuan Lane. It looked like Lane bumped the receiver off the route right as Russell released the pass. But there was no call. The absence of star receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is coming into focus for the Crimson Tide here in the first quarter.

Busy start for Cooper Ranvier

Tennessee kicker Cooper Ranvier is 3 for 3 on field goal attempts in the first quarter after hitting a 41-yarder to put the Volunteers ahead 9-0. UT started with the football at midfield and quickly picked up 26 yards on a George MacIntyre to DaSaahn Brame connection before the Alabama defense stiffened to force the try. MacIntyre is 5 for 10 and has done a good job evading pressure to this point. Eventually, the Vols are going to need more than field goals in order to stay ahead of Alabama's high-powered offense.

Tennessee's defense swarming early

Through two possessions, Alabama has tallied -5 yards and zero first downs. Tennessee's defense is swarming early. In fact, the Crimson Tide dodged another serious bullet when a batted ball at the line of scrimmage was nearly intercepted in the end zone by the Volunteers. This is almost as bad as Alabama's start against Kentucky in Week 2. The Crimson Tide had no problem recovering in that game.

Alabama fortunate to be down just 6-0

Alabama's defense did its job after being put in a bad spot by the Keelon Russell fumble. George MacIntyre hit tight end DaSaahn Brame in the hands over the middle. But Brame could not corral a would-be touchdown, and the Vols settled for another field goal. All things considered, the Crimson Tide are fortunate to be down just 6-0 after two Tennessee red-zone trips in the game's first six minutes.

Alabama's nightmare start

With Alabama facing a third-and-10, Tennessee linebacker Jeremiah Telander slung Keelon Russell down, and Russell fumbled in the process. Tyree Weathersby recovered it at Alabama's 19-yard line. Weathersby initially stood up and ran the football into the end zone. But after review, it was found that his knee was on the ground. Nonetheless, that was a disastrous start for the Alabama offense.

Brad Crawford's Tennessee vs. Alabama pick

It almost feels disrespectful to call this a "get-right" game for the Crimson Tide given their recent struggles at Neyland Stadium, but unless DeSean Bishop controls this game on the ground for the Vols, I don't see a path to a Tennessee victory. The passing game is a struggle for Josh Heupel, and Alabama can score points in a hurry. Falling behind in the first half could lead to a chorus of boos in Knoxville if the Crimson Tide's defense can put together stops. This is a dangerous game for Tennessee, not so much the betting favorites even without Ryan Coleman-Williams on the outside. ... Alabama 30, Tennessee 17.

Chris Hummer's Alabama vs. Tennessee prediction

The Vols have survived this year behind an elite defense. That unit has carried an offense that ranks just 66th nationally in yards per play and 110th in passing yards per game. But is that defense good enough to hold off Alabama? I'm highly skeptical. Alabama's defense has been susceptible in the secondary this year. But the Vols don't have the passing offense to take advantage of that. The Crimson Tide roll in this game for a second straight year. … Alabama 24, Tennessee 17.

Setting the stage for a top-15 rivalry clash

A pair of historic rivals with playoff aspirations are squaring off in a top-15 SEC showdown on Saturday, as No. 6 Alabama travels to No. 14 Tennessee for the Third Saturday in October. The Crimson Tide will be looking to avoid losing consecutive regular season games for the first time since 2007, while the Volunteers will be seeking to snap a four-game home losing streak against ranked opponents.

Alabama (5-1, 3-1 SEC) took a 20-17 home loss to Georgia last week, which leaves the Crimson Tide with a dwindling margin for error entering the second half of their schedule. Tennessee (5-1, 2-1) is coming off an ugly 24-17 win at Arkansas in need of the resume boost that would come with knocking off Alabama.

While Tennessee's defense is thriving midway through the season, facing Alabama will be its toughest test yet. Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell leads the league in passing yards with 1,599 and brings game-changing mobility. Though Alabama star receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is expected to miss the game due to injury, Bama's offense will still pack a punch that tests Tennessee's secondary.

The Volunteers counter with the nation's No. 15 rushing offense and a languishing passing attack that will need to get better if they are going to pull an upset that would reverberate through the SEC and beyond. With blowout road wins over quality foes Kentucky and Mississippi State already in hand, the Tide will look to keep rolling on the road with their first win in Knoxville since 2020.

Alabama WR Ryan Coleman-Williams undergoes surgery

The Crimson Tide's top pass-catcher will miss Saturday's game at Tennessee after undergoing surgery on his knee to repair a meniscus injury, ESPN reports. Alabama hosts Texas A&M next weekend before its open date prior to a showdown at LSU on Nov. 7. Coleman-Williams leads the team with 23 receptions for 415 yards and four touchdowns this fall, including three scores during SEC play.

Neyland blues

The last time Tennessee beat a ranked team at Neyland Stadium was in 2024, when it edged No. 7 Alabama 24-17. The Vols finished 0-3 at home against ranked opponents last season and fell 20-17 to Texas in Week 4, extending their home losing streak against ranked opponents to four games. But something will have to give as the Crimson Tide have dropped two straight inside Neyland Stadium. Whichever team is smoking, the traditional postgame victory cigars will hit a little different this time.

Ryan Coleman-Williams likely out

Alabama wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is unlikely to play against No. 14 Tennessee as he deals with multiple injuries, coach Kalen DeBoer announced on Monday. Coleman-Williams is reportedly dealing with both leg and head injuries after the No. 6 Crimson Tide's loss to Georgia. Coleman-Williams was hit in the head and had to be helped off the field multiple times during the 20-17 loss to the Bulldogs on Saturday. The final hit was from Georgia safety KJ Bolden in the fourth quarter, from which he did not return. Coleman-Williams also wore a brace over his right knee during the past two games.
