When discussing Florida State's status as favorites to win the ACC in 2012, one frequent reason for their high expectations is the depth along the defensive line. It's the kind of depth that allows senior defensive tackle Jacobbi McDaniel the opportunity to use a medical redshirt while he recovers from a broken ankle.
"He'll most likely redshirt," Seminoles' coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday afternoon (via Orlando Sentinel) regarding McDaniel's status for the 2012 season. The fourth-year senior suffered a broken ankle in Florida State's 41-16 win over Duke on Oct. 15. According to Fisher, he might not have been 100 percent until this coming October.
"You've got to give him that full year [to get healthy]," Fisher said. "And we should have enough depth there to be able to do that."
McDaniel has reportedly welcomed the idea of redshirting 2012, particularly with the opportunity to return healthy for a full senior season. The Greenville, Fla. native was a three-sport athlete in high school, and even drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2009 MLB Draft. A full season of healthy play should undoubtedly increase his chances of the 6-foot, 286 pound defensive tackle being selected in the NFL Draft.
"He wants to play," Fisher said of McDaniel. "But he also appreciates that he's a senior and still has that opportunity [to redshirt]. That's one of the things when you don't redshirt early that you do have that luxury of having once you do get injured later in your career."
As a freshman, McDaniel played in all 13 games and then started all 14 games as a sophomore in 2010. He recorded nine tackles in five games of action before suffering the ankle injury last season. The defensive tackle spot will be well-kept while he recovers. Everett Dawkins, Anthony McCloud, Timmy Jernigan, Demonte McAllister, and highly touted true freshman Eddie Goldman are all prepared to contribute inside for the Seminoles.
