Iowa shocks Michigan: Hawkeyes take down Wolverines with poetic walk-off TD pass

Iowa wide receiver Tony Diaz had an outstanding start to the season and established himself as a serious WR1. Against Michigan, though, his running mate Reece Vander Zee proved he is heading back to his pre-injury level. 

Vander Zee led the Hawkeyes with five catches for 66 yards, including the game-winning touchdown with no time left on the clock. Diaz had big plays as well, including a 32-yard reception to set up Iowa's first offensive touchdown drive. 

Add tight ends Addison Ostrenga and DJ Vonnahme to the list and quarterback Hank Brown has one of the better group of pass-catchers that the program has had in a while. 

Despite the loss, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood took a major step forward against a quality defense. Offensive coordinator Jason Beck put a great deal of trust in Underwood as a passer and he delivered with six passes of at least 20 yards. 

On a 49-yard touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan, Underwood was electric, evading traffic and buying Buchanan time to break open. He played more than well enough to win in a key spot, the Hawkeyes just made one more play. 

After stunning Michigan on the road for the first time since 2010, Iowa is set up beautifully to put together a season for the ages. A home matchup against No. 7 Ohio State next week won't be easy, but that's the last ranked game on the schedule. 

After that, Iowa played seven straight games against unranked opponents, with many coming against teams that missed a bowl game last season. Even accounting for a potential loss to the Buckeyes, bulldozing that slate to the tune of  6-1 or better could easily get Iowa into playoff conversations. It's an exciting time to be a Hawkeyes fan. 

FINAL: Iowa 20, Michigan

No. 17 Iowa stunned No. 18 Michigan 20-19 on the final play of the game after Hank Brown threw a game-winning touchdown to Reese Vander Zee with no time remaining at Michigan Stadium. The Hawkeyes beat Michigan in Ann Arbor for the first time since 2010. 

Brown led a 91-yard game-winning drive, aided by a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty to set up a 29-yard pass. After a Michigan injury timeout, Iowa had two seconds remaining to set up the stunning game-winning pass from Brown to Vander Zee, just weeks after Michigan beat Western Michigan on a controversial Hail Mary with one second remaining. 

The Wolverines' passing offense had a big day behind the first pair of 100-yard receiving teammates in Ann Arbor since 2002. Andrew Marsh (106 yards) and JJ Buchanan (130 yards) each made significant plays down the stretch. Buchanan had a 49-yard touchdown reception that gave the Wolverines a lead that seemed to put the game away. 

The Hawkeyes stayed in the game behind some exceptional special teams play, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Braeden Jackson. Iowa had fewer than 100 yards until the closing seconds of the third quarter, when a 32-yard connection from Brown to Tony Diaz. 

But when the game was on the line, Iowa exploded for 156 yards. Brown finished with 227 yards and two touchdowns. Three different pass-catchers finished with at least 40 yards receiving in one of the most emotional games in Iowa history. 

Iowa appears to have thrown a game-winning touchdown as time expires. This play is under review. 

Iowa managed to get through straight stops and force a punt, and will get the ball back with one timeout and just under two minutes remaining. 

After a false start cost them on a 4th-and-1 opportunity, Iowa whiffed on a 51-yard field goal that would seem to all but end their chances. Michigan will have the ball with more than two minutes remaining, just needing a few first downs to run out the clock. 

4Q: Michigan 19, Iowa 14

After Iowa took its first lead, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood stepped up and delivered his best drive of the game. Underwood bought time and found JJ Buchanan streaking downfield for a 49-yard touchdown to once again wrest the lead back. Underwood is up to 276 yards and two touchdowns as the Wolverines cross 400 yards of offense. 

4Q: Iowa 14, Michigan 13

Iowa finally got its first real offensive play of the game when Hank Brown found Tony Diaz for a 32-yard gain. That connection woke Brown up. On third-and-9, Diaz tipped a pass to tight end DJ Vonnahme to convert into the red zone, and then hit Reese Vander Zee for a laser of a touchdown pass. The 16-yard strike pushed the Hawkeyes out to their first lead of the game despite recording just about half as many yards as the Wolverines. Classic Iowa football. 

End 3Q: Michigan 13, Iowa 7

No. 18 Michigan has dominated No. 17 Iowa through three quarters, but the Wolverines have been unable to extend their lead after a series of bad plays. Quarterback Bryce Underwood threw a red zone interception in the third quarter and were stopped on third-and-goal to force another punt. 

Michigan has gotten an efficient day from quarterback Bryce Underwood, completing 15-of-22 passes for 213 yards to extend the lead. The running game is starting to get going, reaching more than 100 yards on the previous drive, but receivers Andrew Marsh (92 yards) and JJ Buchanan (81 yards) lead the way. 

Iowa's offense has been a total nonfactor, recording only 91 total yards and converting 1-of-7 on third down on six drives. The Hawkeyes have only run 29 plays and held the ball for 14:32 nearly 45 full minutes into the game. All six full drives have ended in punts.

Michigan drove the length of the field with relative ease to open the third quarter, getting into the red zone. But after getting gashed by Bryce Underwood, Michigan native Deshaun Lee stepped up and perfectly read Underwood to nab an interception at the corner of the field. It's a big opportunity for Iowa to fight back, but can the offense find any momentum? 

HALF: Michigan 10, Iowa 7

No. 18 Michigan leads No. 17 Iowa 10-7 at the half behind a strong first performance from sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood. The sophomore passed for 162 yards and a touchdown to give the Wolverines a lead. 

Underwood has impressed with his downfield strikes, hitting JJ Buchanan and Andrew Marsh for four completions of more than 20 yards. He completed 11-of-16 passes and added 16 yards on the ground as Michigan accumulated an efficient 232 yards. 

Iowa's offense has been largely a nonfactor, reaching just 72 yards on 3.3 yards per play. The lone successful drive was the opener, when coach Kirk Ferentz opted to punt on fourth-and-1 in plus territory. The only points came on another special teams play, a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Braeden Jackson. 

The Hawkeyes have struggled to stay on the field and have only handed the ball to star running back Kamari Moulton seven times in 25 plays. Quarterback Hank Brown has only 47 yards on 6-of-12 passing. 

Michigan drove the ball deep down the field behind another series of completions by Bryce Underwood, but Iowa got its first defensive break on fourth down. Underwood attempted to jump the line and Iowa smacked him, holding the Wolverines to a stop in the red zone. Iowa has 3:17 remaining to get more points on the board.

Michigan settled for a field goal after another 59-yard drive behind Bryce Underwood, and nearly got yet another break when Xavier Williams got flipped upside down and appeared to fumble. however, the ground caused the fumble, giving the Hawkeyes the ball for the first time in a while.

No. 18 Michigan and No. 17 Iowa are tied at 7-7 after one quarter in the Big Ten opener. The Hawkeyes got a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Braeden Jackson to tie the game one play after Michigan marched down the field. 

After struggling early in the season, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood has stepped up against the vaunted Hawkeyes defense. Underwood threw for 107 yards and rushed for 10 more, including an 18-yard touchdown strike to J.J. Buchanan. 

Iowa built some momentum on the first drive, but opted to punt instead of going for it on fourth down. The Hawkeyes went three-and-out on their next drive and only held the ball for 4:50 in the period. Iowa has just 36 yards of offense to Michigan's 147.

Iowa's special teams struck again in a big way to quickly get back on the board against Michigan. Kickoff returner Braeden Jackson -- the son of NFL legend Fred Jackson -- caught a kickoff and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at the Big House.

Underwood has come out on a mission and put together a strong passing effort to key an 81-yard touchdown drive. The sophomore hit passes of 27 and 21 yards to Andrew Marsh before connecting with J.J. Buchanan for an 18-yard touchdown pass through the Iowa secondary. Underwood is up to 85 yards passing and 10 yards rushing in the first quarter. 

Plenty of attention has been focused on Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood, and the sophomore has responded. Underwood has completed two passes to Andrew Marsh for 47 yards and rushed twice for 10 yards as the Wolverines are in Iowa territory with a chance to get on the board. 

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz loves his special teams, and opted to lean on them after the first drive. After getting stopped short to set up 4th-and-1, Iowa drew a timeout from Michigan, called a timeout of their own and then decided to punt. Boston Everitt dropped a kick right at the 3-yard line, setting up the defense in a strong position for Michigan's first drive. 

Michigan has been living on borrowed time the entire season, including the stunning Hail Mary against Western Michigan. Iowa will be the team to finally make them pay -- and ironically, it'll start on offense. Running back Kamari Moulton and wide receiver Tony Diaz give the program one of its best RB-WR combos of the past 20 years, and they will make just enough explosive plays to pull off the upset in the Big House. Pick: Iowa SU (+178)

Before Iowa linebacker Cam Buffington was racking up double-digit tackles against Iowa State, the Hawkeyes linebacker was a multi-sport legend who dominated eight-man high school football at Winfield-Mt. Union High School, only 45 minutes from Iowa's campus. 

"He sees things fast and then he gets there fast," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "That's kind of a good combination if you get that. He's just going to keep getting better and building on that. He's a good young player."

When No. 17 Iowa takes on No. 18 Michigan this Saturday, Kirk Ferentz will be in the midst of his 28th season with the Hawkeyes. It's tough to imagine him coaching anywhere else, but the Wolverines had some interest, at least initially during their 2007 coaching search.
