Mississippi State makes a statement
FINAL: Mississippi State 38, Minnesota 13
Mississippi State made a statement in Big Ten country on Saturday with a 38-13 win at Minnesota behind the stellar play of Kamario Taylor. The sophomore quarterback dazzled with both his arm and legs while the Bulldogs built a 28-6 halftime lead. Taylor finished 16 of 22 passing for 227 yards and three touchdowns while adding 86 yards rushing.
Minnesota drew within 28-13 early in the third quarter when Aydan West recovered a Taylor fumble in the end zone for the Gophers' only touchdown. But Mississippi State's defense bent without breaking in the second half by holding Minnesota scoreless on three straight trips to Bulldogs territory.
The visitors then put it away with a 96-yard touchdown drive capped by a 3-yard Fluff Bothwell touchdown run with 12:32 remaining. Bothwell finished 113 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 18 carries. On the other end, Minnesota had no running game. Veteran back Darius Taylor finished with just 15 yards on 16 carries as the Gophers finished with just 13 rushing yards. Run game struggles have been a pervasive issue for Minnesota the past two seasons, and this performance suggested the Gophers will be fighting uphill in the ground game once again.
