After a battle that ran from spring practice through most of fall camp, No. 20 Tennessee has named freshman Faizon Brandon its starting quarterback with under two weeks until the season-opener against Furman, sources confirmed to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz.

A five-star recruit and the No. 2 quarterback in the 2026 signing class, per 247Sports, Brandon didn't wait to make an impression on the coaching staff in Knoxville. Brandon beat out sophomore George MacIntyre -- a blue-chip prospect in his own right -- with strong performances in scrimmages throughout the offseason.

In high school, Brandon led Grimsley (N.C.) to consecutive state championships in 2024 and 2025 while posting a 35-1 record as a starter. Throughout his high school career, Brandon threw 90 touchdown passes to just 10 interceptions. Four of those picks came as a freshman, when he played in a backup role.

What Brandon lacks in experience, he makes up for in raw talent, and he raises the ceiling of the Tennessee offense. It's up to the other 10 players around him to make sure the flloor is higher with a freshman at the helm.

Brandon will make his first start against Furman on Sept. 5, and while that will be a good opportunity to get his feet wet, the level of difficulty rises sharply in Week 2 with a road game against Georgia Tech. That will be just a taste of what's to come for the young signal caller as Tennessee faces a daunting slate once SEC play begins.

Young QB must mature quickly

Outside of games against Furman (Week 1) and Kennesaw State (Week 3), there aren't many opportunities for Tennessee to exhale. That also means Brandon can't afford too many clunkers if the Vols are going to exceed expectations in 2026.

The Sept. 12 matchup against the Yellow Jackets isn't exactly a cakewalk, but the real challenge begins when No. 5 Texas rolls into Knoxville two weeks later for the conference opener, and it doesn't get much easier after that. Tennessee faces four teams ranked in the top 15 of the preseason AP poll.

Even some of the more winnable SEC games -- like Arkansas and South Carolina -- are on the road. Let's not forget that two of the best Tennessee teams in recent memory lost in those venues. The 2022 Volunteers were upset by the Gamecocks, and the 2024 College Football Playoff team fell to the Razorbacks.

For a quarterback making his first college start in less than two weeks, that's a tough draw. The success of Tennessee's season may hinge on how quickly Brandon adapts to life in the SEC.

Strong supporting cast

The good news for the Volunteers is that the offensive environment for Brandon looks excellent on paper. Tennessee has plenty of experience and returning production on that side of the ball, so that should make life easier on a young quarterback who's just getting his feet wet.

Perhaps most importantly, Tennessee returns 74% of its snaps along the offensive line, and that unit could be one of the best in the entire country. David Sanders Jr. -- an SEC All-Freshman honoree last season -- will protect the blind side at left tackle while center Sam Pendleton anchors the line with 20 career starts.

The weapons around Brandon are pretty impressive as well. Wide receivers Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley each topped 800 yards last season, and five-star freshman TK Keys joins that position group in 2026. Accompanying Brandon/Macintyre in the backfield will be running back DeSean Bishop, who totaled 1,211 yards from scrimmage and 16 touchdowns last year.

On the whole, the Volunteers return 61% of their offensive snaps from a year ago, which ranks ninth in the country. Starting an inexperienced quarterback against a nine-game SEC schedule may not be ideal, but if ever there was a scenario in which it could work, this is probably it.
