Oklahoma shocks Texas: Sooners deliver No. 1 Longhorns crushing Red River Rivalry loss

Oklahoma stunned No. 1 Texas 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday after a game-winning field goal by Tate Sandell as time expired. The Sooners came back from multiple first-half deficits to pick up only their second Red River Rivalry win under Brent Venables and knock off the top team in the nation.

The Sooners struggled mightily on offense through the first half, only sticking around thanks to a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Texas quarterback Arch Manning was dealing, throwing two long touchdowns to take a 10-point lead at the half. But after halftime, Oklahoma started to take control.

The Sooners forced four straight punts and pulled together their first offensive touchdown drive since 2023. Oklahoma's defense baited quarterback Arch Manning and returned a pick-six 42 yards for a touchdown to take a seven-point lead.

Texas tied the game and had multiple opportunities to take the lead. The Longhorns missed a 53-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. They later needed only 15 yards to get back into field goal range, but Manning threw a brutal interception that helped set up the game-winner for Oklahoma.

Manning threw for 260 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Oklahoma got only 238 total yards, but three drives in the second half led to points.

Finding a way

Oklahoma knew it didn't have obvious answers on offense. Instead of trying to force things, the Sooners managed to find a way to score in unorthodox ways. Oklahoma got a special teams score in the first half to get on the board. Then, a pick-six on Manning swung the tide.

Finally, in the second half, the running game picked up enough to score their first offensive touchdown since 2023. Then, John Mateer made just enough throws to set up the game-winning field goal. Oklahoma needs more from its offense, but the defense and special teams are giving it a chance to survive.

Manning's inconsistency

Texas quarterback Arch Manning remains one of the most heralded quarterback talents in the country, but his inconsistency finally cost the Longhorns. Manning had a couple of big-time throws in the first half, but down the stretch, Texas's offense struggled.

The Longhorns had four straight punts to open the second half, and capped it off with a terrible pick-six thrown from Arch Manning to Peyton Bowen. He tried again to make something happen when it wasn't necessary with seconds remaining. Instead, he threw another interception.

Texas has simply not gotten reliable results from Manning in big spots. He's up to six touchdowns and four interceptions against power conference foes. Even after an offseason of growth, there hasn't been major progress.

Oklahoma stuns Texas

FINAL: Oklahoma 27, Texas 24

Manning whiffs again

Texas was only 15 yards from field goal range after getting the ball back, but Texas quarterback Arch Manning threw a wobbling pass right to Oklahoma defensive back Xavier Guillory. Oklahoma has 15 seconds remaining to try and get into field goal range.

Oklahoma has one more shot

Texas kicker Gianni Spetic lined up for a potentially game-winning 53-yard field goal, but the kick sailed wide right. Oklahoma now has just under two minutes to drive down the field and win the game with the game tied 24-24. The Sooners have both a defensive and special teams touchdown.

Where's that been?

4Q: Texas 24, Oklahoma 24

After throwing a putrid interception, Texas put together its best drive of the day to effortlessly cruise 75 yards down the field in seven plays. Arch Manning completed a bomb to Cam Coleman for 42 yards, and then hit Jermaine Bishop for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Nothing can ever be easy with this team, but the Longhorns are again battling.

Absolute mayhem in Dallas

4Q: Oklahoma 24, Texas 17

Oklahoma's defense has been threatening all game, and Texas quarterback Arch Manning finally felt the consequences. Manning threw a floater that Peyton Bowen picked off and ran back 42 yards for a touchdown to give the Sooners their first lead of the afternoon.

Texas collapsing in Dallas

4Q: Oklahoma 17, Texas 17

Oklahoma came back to tie the Red River Rivalry at 17-17 against No. 1 Texas entering the fourth quarter at the Cotton Bowl. The Sooners scored their first offensive touchdown since 2023, only seconds into the final period.

The Sooners began to take over with their running game and benefited from a pair of major penalties on Texas' defense. On third down, Isaiah Sategna drew a pass interference call to set up a game-tying touchdown by running back Lloyd Avant to electrify the Sooners crowd.

Since going up 10 points at the half, Texas's offense has largely imploded. The Longhorns punted on all three second-half possessions, including a pair of three-and-outs, while posting only 41 total yards. Texas also called an ill-fated timeout on a defensive fourth down that helped set up a 53-yard field goal by Oklahoma.

Texas is still outgaining Oklahoma by nearly 70 yards, but a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown is standing tall with the game on the line. The Longhorns have only touched the ball three times in the second half.

Strange Texas call leads to OU points

3Q: Texas 17, Oklahoma 10

Oklahoma ran some trickeration, dropping out of a field goal formation into a punting formation and running several motions. Instead of taking the gift of a punt, Texas called timeout, which led to Oklahoma kicking a 53-yard field goal. Suddenly, it's a one-score game in Dallas.

First explosive run

Oklahoma running back Lloyd Avant broke off the first dynamic offensive play of the game for the Sooners as the junior broke off a 42-yard run on the Sooners' first drive of the second half. Oklahoma has only handed the ball off to running backs eight total times early in the third quarter.

Texas leads after rough offensive half

HALF: Texas 17, Oklahoma 7

No. 1 Texas leads Oklahoma 17-7 after scoring a late field goal to end the first half. The Longhorns get the ball to start the second half with a chance to put the game further out of reach.

The Sooners' offense has been a disaster for most of the game, posting only two yards rushing on 12 carries. Quarterback John Mateer has run into multiple sacks and tackles for loss as the Longhorns' defense created major pressure. Even on their one successful drive, a holding penalty on left tackle Ryan Fodje pushed them out of easy field goal range. The only Oklahoma points came on a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown.

Texas got two fantastic passes from quarterback Arch Manning, touchdown throws of 41 and 34 yards. Aside from the explosives, the Longhorns have four three-and-outs as the offense has struggled to be consistent. Manning is 9-of-13 for 124 yards and two touchdowns, while Mateer sits at 10-of-13 for 68 yards.

The Longhorns have seven tackles for loss and two sacks, including two TFLs and a sack from star edge rusher Colin Simmons.

Penalty wastes quality drive

Oklahoma finally put together a lengthy drive, an 11-play sequence that lasted more than six minutes of game time. After holding was called on left tackle Ryan Fodje, the Sooners were pushed to the limits of field goal range. Tate Sandell, an All-American kicker last season, stunningly missed a 52-yarder, keeping Oklahoma again without any offensive points.

Manning strikes again

2Q: Texas 14, Oklahoma 7

Texas wasted no time getting back on the board after Oklahoma managed to muster a special teams score. The Longhorns converted a key fourth-and-1 and capitalized three plays later with a 34-yard touchdown bomb from Arch Manning to Ryan Wingo to again put Texas back on top.

Wingo got lost in the middle of the Oklahoma zone and was able to create an easy pitch-and-catch to again break the deadlock. Texas is outgaining Oklahoma 134-15.

Mayhem?!

2Q: Texas 7, Oklahoma 7

Oklahoma finally got a big play, and it came on special teams. Danny Okoye broke through the line and blocked a punt in the end zone, which was narrowly recovered by Dakoda Fields for a touchdown. The score is Oklahoma's first touchdown of any kind since 2023 in the Red River Rivalry... though, once again, it didn't come on offense.

Longhorns lead early in ugly game

End 1Q: Texas 7, Oklahoma 0

No. 1 Texas leads Oklahoma 7-0 after an ugly first quarter at the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns broke open the game with a 41-yard touchdown throw from Arch Manning to Cam Coleman to take an early lead.

Oklahoma's offense has been a total disaster, reaching only 15 yards in 15 plays. Quarterback John Mateer has looked completely lost, walking into multiple sacks and tackles for loss to stall the Sooners' offense. All five Oklahoma drives have ended in three-and-outs. Texas All-American Colin Simmons had a strip-sack on the first drive.

Manning's pass over the head of the defense was a highlight moment that will appear on his NFL Draft highlight tape, but the rest of the day has been forgettable. Outside of that play, the Longhorns have only 22 yards in 11 plays with three punts.

After allowing a sack to Oklahoma's Trent Wilson, the Longhorns are facing third-and-12 late in their own territory as the second quarter begins.

Game over?

1Q: Texas 7, Oklahoma 0

Through the first 15 plays, there were only 15 combined yards, but Texas quarterback Arch Manning finally broke the game open. Manning launched a 41-yard bomb to Cam Coleman in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. The Longhorns have struggled to create early, but Oklahoma has generated one total yard through three drives.

A first disaster for Mateer

Texas defensive end Collin Simmons got his first blood of the day, strip-sacking John Mateer on the third play of the game. Oklahoma was lucky to recover, but Mateer's first two touches were a tackle for loss and a sack. Needless to say, every Oklahoma concern coming in offensively was reinforced on that first drive.

What is going on?

The start of Texas and Oklahoma was delayed because the field crew neglected to put the back pylons down ahead of the teams taking the field. Fans are booing and confused. Can this game ever be normal?

Mateer gets first shot

Texas opted to defer, so Oklahoma will get the ball to start in desperate need of a hot offensive start. The Sooners have failed to score a touchdown in three of Brent Venables' four opportunities in the Red River Rivalry.

Could Oklahoma bench Mateer?

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables is evaluating all options at quarterback after John Mateer's slow start. Mateer remains the starter, but backups Bowe Bentley and Whitt Newbauer have gotten additional snaps during the bye week.

Venables admitted the staff considered benching Mateer during a 41-13 loss to No. 2 Georgia, but they ultimately stuck with him. The Sooners are averaging 11.5 points per game against Power Four competition with Mateer at the helm.

"I have no idea," Venables said. "We're not there right now … John's our starting quarterback."

What does Arch need to prove

By the end of September, there was consistent enthusiasm among NFL personnel staffers regarding certain college quarterbacks and their future as NFL draft prospects.

It was enthusiasm -- based on the standout play of a few specific quarterbacks -- that was shared unprompted by a combination of NFL player personnel directors, college scouting directors and scouts during conversations with CBS Sports.

Except it hasn't been about the quarterbacks that those NFL personnel staffers originally expected to be talking about at this point. As was the case in the media space, there was a feeling around the NFL personnel world heading into the season that there were a number of quarterbacks with a chance to be early-round picks in next year's draft, including several that at that point they believed had first-round (and possibly early first-round) potential. The consistent belief going into the season was that it was a good year if you were an NFL team that needed a quarterback and that it could end up being one of the stronger QB draft classes in recent years.

Offensive line woes

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables called out the state of the program's offensive line development ahead of a battle against No. 1 Texas on Saturday in the annual Red River Rivalry.

"It's been incredibly inconsistent and very disappointing," Venables said. "As you build your football team, that's a critical place. That's a place that probably requires the most development of any position that you have on your roster."
