Penn State's inexperienced receiving corps just lost its most grizzled veteran, as receiver Shawney Kersey has left the program for personal reasons.
After receivers Justin Brown and Devon Smith transferred to Oklahoma and Marshall, respectively, before the season started, Kersey became Penn State's leading returning pass-catcher with 5 receptions in 2011. Through Penn State's first two games this season Kersey had caught 6 passes for a total of 44 yards.
He also was listed as a starter on Penn State's depth chart for this weekend's game against Navy before leaving the program.
All of which means that a Penn State offense that has been struggling to put points on the board -- the Nittany Lions are ranked 107th in the country with 15 points per game -- could have even more problems.
The good news for the Nittany Lions and Matt McGloin is that this season's top target, receiver Allen Robinson and tight end Kyle Carter haven't gone anywhere. Still, other options will have to emerge if Bill O'Brien's passing attack is going to achieve consistent success.
