  • Vikings' Brett Rypien: Inactive for Sunday

Rypien (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Packers.

Rypien was the emergency third quarterback for the Vikings in their Week 17 win over the Lions, but with the return of starter J.J. McCarthy, the QB no longer has a game-day role. John Wolford will be Sunday's emergency third quarterback.

  • Vikings' Brett Rypien: Emergency QB for Week 17

Rypien (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Lions but will act as Minnesota's emergency No. 3 quarterback.

Rypien will get a chance to operate as the Vikings' emergency third-string quarterback with starter J.J. McCarthy (hand) ruled out for Thanksgiving Day. In order for Rypien to take the field, both Max Brosmer and John Wolford would have to be forced out versus Detroit due to injury, illness or ejection.

  • Vikings' Brett Rypien: Claimed off waivers by Minnesota

The Vikings claimed Rypien off waivers Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Rypien was cut by the Colts on Monday and lands in a familiar place after he spent the offseason with the Vikings. With J.J. McCarthy (hand) out for Saturday's game against the Lions, Rypien is a veteran backup option to undrafted rookie Max Brosmer. Rypien last attempted a regular-season pass in 2023 with the Rams.

  • Brett Rypien: Out in Indianapolis

Rypien was waived by the Colts on Monday.

The Boise State product joined the Colts' practice squad in mid-October, but it now appears the team has decided to move in another direction. Rypien appeared in two regular-season games for the Rams in 2023, completing 18 of 38 pass attempts for 172 yards, one interception and no touchdowns. In a corresponding move, Indianapolis activated DeForest Buckner off its injured-reserve list Monday.

  • Colts' Brett Rypien: Inactive in Week 15

Rypien (coach's decision) is inactive as the Colts' emergency No. 3 quarterback for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.

Though he began Week 15 prep as the only healthy quarterback in the Colts organization and was officially signed off the practice squad Wednesday, Rypien will be available only in an emergency Sunday. With Daniel Jones (Achilles) out for the season and Anthony Richardson (orbital) stuck on injured reserve, the Colts lured Philip Rivers out of retirement and are expected to have the 44-year-old start Sunday in what will be his first NFL appearance since the 2020 postseason. Riley Leonard, who was slowed by a low-grade knee sprain to begin the week, will be active as Rivers' backup.

  • Colts' Brett Rypien: Signed to 53-man roster

The Colts signed Rypien to the active roster from the practice squad Wednesday.

Head coach Shane Steichen indicated Monday that Rypien could be in line to start Sunday's game against the Seahawks if Riley Leonard (knee) is forced to miss any time due to the Grade 1 PCL sprain in his right knee, though the team has since officially inked 44-year-old veteran Philip Rivers to the practice squad. Indianapolis' plan at the quarterback position in the wake of Daniel Jones' season-ending Achilles injury figures to be an evolving situation, as Anthony Richardson (orbital) will not come off IR in Week 15 but could also join the picture eventually.

  • Brett Rypien: Could start at QB for Indy

Rypien, who is on the Indianapolis pratice squad, could be in line to start this week at Seattle with Daniel Jones out with a torn Achilles tendon and Riley Leonard's status uncertain due to a knee injury. "Right now, (Rypien would) be the guy that's on our roster. Like I said, we're working through those situations right now," head coach Shane Steichen told the Indianapolis Star.

Indianapolis may have no choice other than to call up Rypien from the practice squad and take over starting quarterback duties. Rypien was with Minnesota during training camp, but he was cut in late August and subsequently joined Cincinnati's practice squad. The veteran QB was signed to the Bengals' active roster after Joe Burrow (toe) went on IR in mid-September, but Rypien got into just one game with the Bengals, playing three offensive snaps without attempting a pass in Week 3. Rypien then was released by Cincinnati and subsequently signed with Indianapolis.

The Colts have a need for QB depth after placing Anthony Richardson (eye) on injured reserve Monday, though it will likely be Riley Leonard who steps in as Daniel Jones' backup this Sunday against the Chargers.
