The Commanders signed Cowart to a contract Tuesday.
The Commanders hosted Cowart for a workout Monday, and the team liked what they saw out of the 2019 fifth-rounder, who spent most of last season on the Jets' injured reserve due to an ankle injury. Cowart last saw regular-season action in 2024 with the Bears, when he logged 26 tackles (14 solo), including 2.5 sacks, across 15 games.

Cowart spent the start of the 2025 season on the Jets' injured-reserve list with an ankle injury before they waived him back in December, but he's now apparently back in football shape. The veteran is eligible to suit up immediately for any team willing to sign him ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Cowart opened the regular season on injured reserve due to an ankle injury that he sustained in early August during training camp. He was competing for a starting spot on the Jets' defensive line, but the 2019 fifth-rounder has been let go by the team before having the opportunity to return to practice. It's unclear where Cowart is in his recovery from his injury, but once fully healthy, he would be in position to join a team in need of interior depth on the defensive line.

Cowart missed all three of the Jets' preseason games due to an ankle injury that he suffered during training camp practice in early August.
