  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Sits out preseason opener

Gibbs was held out of Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals.

The star running back was among a number of key skill players rested by the Lions on Thursday, a group that also included QB Jared Goff, WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, as well as TE Sam LaPorta. Since he signed a lucrative three-year contract extension with the team last week, Gibbs -- who had previously reportedly been dealing with a minor back issue -- has been practicing, and is thus slated to reprise his role as the clear-cut top option in Detroit's backfield, and in turn maintain his standing as an elite fantasy option ahead of the 2026 regular season.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Lands three-year extension

The Lions and Gibbs (back) agreed to terms on a three-year extension Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The $67.5 million deal can be worth up to $75.75 million and includes $51.5 million guaranteed, barely surpassing Bijan Robinson's extension (three years, $66.75 million and $51 million guaranteed) with the Falcons from earlier this week to make the former the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Gibbs has racked up 3,768 yards from scrimmage and 38 touchdowns in 34 regular-season games over the last two campaigns, so the investment made in him by Detroit is warranted. He'll continue to operate as the engine of the Lions offense for the foreseeable future.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Working off to side Thursday

Gibbs (back) took part in the Lions' walkthrough and stretch Thursday before taking part in conditioning work on a side field during practice, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

After Gibbs arrived at the Lions' facility in full uniform, he appeared poised to take part in his first practice of training camp, but he's apparently not ready to get involved in drills just yet. Gibbs is managing what appears to be a minor back issue, though his desire for a long-term contract extension may also be a factor in keeping him from practicing. With the Falcons' Bijan Robinson and Colts' Jonathan Taylor securing new contracts this week, Gibbs could be next in line to put pen to paper on a new deal.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Present for practice

Gibbs (back) was in uniform and taking reps during the early walkthrough portion of Thursday's practice, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.

Gibbs, who coach Dan Campbell previously noted was dealing with a "little bit of a back" issue that cropped up during conditioning tests, has been looking for a new deal with the Lions, so his presence at practice, in any capacity, is notable. However, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, after the team's walkthrough and stretch, Gibbs went to a side field to work with a trainer, so it appears as though the running back may not participate in the rest of Thursday's session after all.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Closing in on three-year deal?

Gibbs (back) and the Lions have made substantial progress on a three-year contract extension that would make him the highest-paid running back in the league, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports Thursday.

According to Schultz, a deal could get done as soon as Thursday. Gibbs has been limited to conditioning work in practice amid ongoing contract negotiations with the Lions, but the star running back could begin practicing as soon as a deal is reached, assuming his minor back issue is behind him. In order to become the NFL's highest-paid running back, Gibbs would need to exceed the three-year, $66.75 million contract Bijan Robinson signed with the Falcons on Tuesday, which included $51 million guaranteed.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Still not practicing

Gibbs (back) was present but not in uniform for Monday's practice, Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News reports.

When asked when he thinks he'll return to the practice field, Gibbs -- who has yet to take reps during training camp as he reportedly holds in for a new contract -- the running back said "only time will tell." Per Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com, coach Dan Campbell noted last week that Gibbs was dealing with a "little bit of a back" issue that cropped up during conditioning tests, but on Monday, Gibbs declined to comment on the reason for his absence. For his part, Campbell said this past Thursday that he's "not even sweating" Gibbs' situation, but until his star back re-takes the field, added practice reps will be available for Isiah Pacheco, Sione Vaki (eye) Jacob Saylors, Jabari Small and Kye Robichaux.
