Fantasy Baseball: First H2H points mock draft for 2026 underscores the scarcity at second base
This mock also underscores changes to the draft pool following moves made at Winter Meetings

The theme so far this offseason has been free agents staying put, which means, apart from the usual closer carousel, not a lot has changed since our last mock draft over a month ago.
But the format has. Rather than another Rotisserie draft, we made our second bite at the 2026 apple Head-to-Head points.
Historically, it's been known as the format that favors pitchers, but more accurately, it's the more forgiving format for pitchers. When aces used to handle 220-plus innings, yeah, they had a big scoring advantage, but as their workload expectations have diminished, the distinctions at the position have lessened. You'll notice that apart from Tarik Skubal, Garrett Crochet, and Paul Skenes, only one starting pitcher (Jacob deGrom, surprisingly enough) went off the board before Round 4. That's not so unlike the way we draft starting pitchers in Rotisserie.
The new point of emphasis in Head-to-Head points leagues is impact bats, which, of course, have always been a big draw in Fantasy Baseball, but savvy drafters have come to realize it goes double for a smaller format like this one. With only nine hitter spots to fill, each one matters all the more.
What's the toughest place to get an impact bat right now? Second base, and you'll see how drafters stretched to fill that position in this one. Compared to NFBC ADP, Ketel Marte went 13 spots earlier than average, Brice Turang went 10 spots earlier, Luke Keaschall 73 spots earlier, Nico Hoerner 29 spots earlier, Jose Altuve 23 spots earlier, Jackson Holliday 25 spots earlier, Ozzie Albies 52 spots earlier, Brandon Lowe 63 spots earlier, and, well, you get the idea.
The biggest climber there, Keaschall, owes something to the difference in scoring format, and you may say it's unfair to compare Rotisserie ADP to a Head-to-Head points draft, but it actually bolsters the point I'm making. More in this format than any other, people don't want to get left out at the position.
So is it worth it? It can be! But I'm not sure it is for second base in 2026. The truth is that apart from Marte, Jazz Chisholm, and maybe Turang, there isn't much impact to be found there, and you're not going to will it into existence by taking a player earlier. Jose Altuve, who was drafted in Round 7 of this one, averaged 2.8 Head-to-Head points per game last year. So did Jorge Polanco and Gleyber Torres, who were drafted in Rounds 19 and 21, respectively. Sure, I'd rather have Altuve -- or Jackson Holliday or Ozzie Albies, who all present more upside than Polanco and Torres. But their most likely scenarios, at least for this scoring format, aren't different enough to justify the upcharge.
Yes, finding impact at every position is critical in this format, but you have to recognize when there's no more impact to be found. To me, chasing it makes a little more sense at third base, where the drop-off is continual rather than plateaued, but I may just be trying to justify my pick of Isaac Paredes, 97 spots ahead of ADP. He's underrated, I tells ya!

And here are a few other takeaways:
- This draft was scheduled to coincide with the end of the Winter Meetings, but they didn't influence the results much. Pete Alonso got a little bit of a bump with his move from the Mets to the Orioles -- which you could argue is a park upgrade, though I suspect he's losing more than he gains with Juan Soto no longer hitting in front of him. Really, he, Matt Olson, Bryce Harper, Rafael Devers, and Freddie Freeman should go off the board in quick succession, and they still did in this one. Freeman was actually the first drafted, even though I rank him last, fearing some age-related decline, but the scoring format does favor him.
- I had expected Trey Yesavage to fly up draft boards given his postseason heroics, crazy minor league strikeout numbers, and already legendary splitter, but I'm continuing to find the cost to be quite reasonable, grabbing him 135th overall in this one. Sure, for all the high points, there were some inconsistencies, mostly related to walks, but pitchers like Sandy Alcantara, Michael King, and Emmet Sheehan have greater questions to answer. All three went before Yesavage here.
- Head-to-Head points is the format where SPARPs take on significance, with the theory being that a relief pitcher-eligible starter can outscore the typical closer, and among the pitchers taken who fit that description were Ryne Nelson (144th overall), Ian Seymour (179th), and Reid Detmers (231st). The Troy Melton pick (145th) was also probably made with that strategy in mind, though the Tigers' intentions for him aren't so clear. Believe it or not, Cody Ponce (213th) and Anthony Kay (223rd), who are both returning to the majors after successful stints in East Asia, are SPARPs as well, retaining RP eligibility from their previous time in the majors.
- Speaking of East Asia, a trio of Japanese stars who are expected to sign in the majors were all selected in this draft, with starting pitcher Tatsuya Imai going 177th and third basemen Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto going 184th and 251st, respectively. That's later than they'll go once they sign, so I'm not sure having them in this mock draft is illustrative of anything. Imai feels like the can't-miss option of the three, but Murakami and Okamoto should help to alleviate the scarcity at third base. For this format, Okamoto might actually be the more attractive of the two since he doesn't have Murakami's strikeout concerns, but Murakami's power could be so massive that the strikeouts don't even matter. For a more detailed analysis of these players, check out Chris Towers' recent article.
