Catchers hit like pitchers. You might have heard that here before. But when we find some that don't, it makes us all giddy.
Buster Posey and Carlos Santana, both likely June callups, are two that don't and do. Don't hit like pitchers, that is, and do make us giddy. Giddy as in giddy up: let's get them to the major leagues already.
If you paid the premiums on Joe Mauer and Victor Martinez on Draft Day, or even tried to, you know how much a good-hitting catcher means in Fantasy. Two more future slugging catcher stars are on their way to the majors and helping owners.
You have to be so sick of seeing future backup backstop Lou Marson hover around the Mendoza Line (.200) for the awful Indians. And, those pitching-rich Giants deserve better than that futile offense they are running out there. The Indians, third-worst in the AL in runs scored, and Giants, coincidentally third-worst in the NL in runs scored, need offensive upgrades and will get them at the toughest positions to find good run producers.
Ironically, Posey might arrive in San Francisco to hit like, not a catcher or a pitcher, but a first baseman -- the easiest position to slot some offense. With left fielder Mark DeRosa potentially needing wrist surgery, the Giants gave Aubrey Huff his season debut in the outfield this week. Posey, who played all nine positions in his final home game at Florida State, has alternated between catcher and first base in his past four games in Triple-A. He is going to arrive to back up Bengie Molina behind the plate part-time ... but hit full-time.
The Giants' No. 1 pick from 2008 has a .343 average with six homers, 30 RBI, 29 runs, one steal, a .437 OBP and .536 SLUG. GM Brian Sabean, the one who will be on the other end of the eventual call, isn't wholely impressed, though.
"He is swinging the bat in a (hitters') league where it's tough to evaluate a high average," Sabean told the San Francisco Chronicle this week. "We can't see how Posey would immediately fit in as regards to playing time. We want an idea that he's going to get significant time."
Since that statement, the Giants placed Huff in left field, had Posey play a few games at first base and saw him pop a homer Wednesday night. It certainly is coming together.
The same is true for Santana, who really didn't need Marson to prove unworthy of full-time at-bats in the major leagues. Santana, too, popped a homer this week (Tuesday) and is now hitting .313-10-40-30-5 (.447-.573) through 150 at-bats in Triple-A. He leads the International League in OBP and BB and is third in HR, SLUG and OPS and fourth in RBI. He is also maintaining a better than 1-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (29-35). That is one of the general signs that you are ready for the next challenge.
Each catcher is currently owned in 45 percent of CBSSports.com's leagues, trailing only the minor-league homer leader Michael Stanton (17) among hitter prospects (see stats below). Stanton, by the way, has recently been playing games in left field, the position where 2009 NL Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan has struggled -- at least offensively.
OK, June 1 is upon us, so where the heck are all the prospects? Why in the world is Stephen Strasburg's arrival date continually getting moved back? Maybe the slowness of all these callups is causing teams to move back their target dates to avoid the dreaded Super Two. Remember, being in the top 17 percent of your class in service time is contingent on all the callups in baseball. It is set up like time-sensored dominoes.
Indians and Giants fans -- and Posey and Santana owners -- are hoping those dominoes start to fall.
Prospect watch
Every week we break down all the minor leaguers who are owned in at least 1 percent of our Fantasy leagues. This will be your essential guide to unearthing the elite prospects before they hit the big time. This week we give you statistics through play Wednesday, May 26 for all the players in Double- and Triple-A, seperated by hitters and pitchers.
Note: Mike Moustakas, Domonic Brown, Jesus Montero, Chris C. Carter were not originally included in the stats below. We added them Sunday, May 30 at 11:45 ET with their stats through Saturday, May 29.

Rookie watch
Top AL rookies to date
- Neftali Feliz, RP, TEX -- He has been lights out as a closer and mostly because he has had surprising command.
- Brennan Boesch, OF, DET -- He has managed to slug his way back past his fellow rookie outfield teammate.
- Austin Jackson, OF, DET -- He was able to make it back quickly after being beaned in the head.
- Mitch Talbot, SP, CLE -- He leads all rookie pitchers with 60 1/3 innings and six victories through Wednesday.
- John Jaso, C, TB -- He is a good hitting catcher that has proven valuable in a pinch for the Rays and Fantasy owners.
- Honorable mentions: Wade Davis, SP, TB; Alfredo Simon, RP, BAL; Sergio J. Santos, RP, CHW; Joaquin Arias, SS, TEX; Reid Brignac, 2B, TB; Brian Matusz, SP, BAL; Jason Donald, SS, CLE; and Alex Burnett, RP, MIN.
Top NL rookies to date
- Jason Heyward, OF, ATL -- Despite some slumps, he is maintaining a pace of .290-31-123-91-10; he might even wind up better, too.
- Jaime Garcia, SP, STL -- Is it going to be possible to win the NL Cy Young and not win the NL Rookie of the Year? No, but it is a funny note.
- Mike Leake, SP, CIN -- OK, we figured he could be useful right away, but we had little clue he would be this good.
- Starlin Castro, SS, CHC -- He is going to stay in the Cubs' two-hole, which will amp up the pressure, but give him better opportunities.
- Hisanori Takahashi, SP, NYM -- No one will be excited by a 35-year-old rookie, but he certainly looks worth of adding in mixed leagues.
- Honorable mentions: David Freese, 3B, STL; Ian Desmond, SS, WAS; Jhoulys Chacin, SP, COL; John Ely, SP, LAD; Gaby Sanchez, 1B, FLA; Ike Davis, 1B, NYM; Tyler Colvin, OF, CHC; Carlos Monasterios, SP, LAD; Drew Storen, RP, WAS; Raul Valdes, RP, NYM; and Luis Atilano, SP, WAS.
Newbie needs
Jeff: My question is about someone who isn't even in the player database, Rudy Owens in the Pirates system. In a league as deep as mine (23 roster spots, 17 reserve in a 12-team 5x5 NL-only keeper league), prospects are really the only way build a championship. For pitchers, I gravitate to those who show high K rates at High-A or above, and Owens certainly fills the bill. Why isn't he on the radar yet?
Emack: Owens was a 26th-round pick as a draft and follow in 2006, which kept him from being highly sought in long-term keeper leagues. Fantasy owners tend to stick to the early rounders. The 22-year-old, 6-foot-3 lefty is 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA and 45 strikeouts to nine walks in 52 2/3 innings. Those are numbers good enough to get him owned in more than 1 percent of CBSSports.com's leagues now that we added him to the database.
Chris Williams, Brielle, N.J.: Glad to see Carlos Peguero and Jerry Sands getting some love. Any thoughts on Drew Cumberland, SS, SD. This guy hit close to .300 the past two years in Class A and now in Class A Advanced his bat is a baseball magnet. He has a decent K-BB ratio, is stealing lots of bases and has some extra base pop too. Any thoughts on this guy?
Emack: Cumberland is a good athlete and a hitting machine in the hitter-friendly California League at .356. He is going to set some career highs in the power categories, too. We tend to be cautious about numbers in that league, but clearly he is due for a promotion to Double-A by midseason. At just 21 years of age, he might be able to impact the Padres and Fantasy leagues in 2011 as a .300-hitting basestealer.
Nick Leco, Warwick, R.I.: Could you please add Bo Greenwell of the Indians to your player database? He was a sixth-round pick in the 2007 June draft and his currently hitting .325 in the minors. Plus, he is the son of Mike Greenwell, who is my favorite player of all time. So, he has pedigree going for him, which is nice.
Emack: A Greenwell was added to our database Thursday and Caddyshack was quoted. It feels like the '80s all over again.
Peter: Can we get Randall Delgado added to the database?
Emack: It is done. One of the minor league's strikeout leaders, Delgado is pushing fellow Brave Mike Minor on the strikeout list and among the organization's top pitching prospects. Julio Teheran is pretty darn good, too. Delgado struck out 12 in seven innings Tuesday in high Class A, giving him 68 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings to go with a 2.43 ERA and .207 batting-average against. Man, the Braves just keep churning them out for us.
