If you follow the minor leagues, you might be aware of the belief that Triple-A is a crossroads. Class A is the breeding ground, Double-A is the development level and Triple-A is like community college ... a mix of those still on the rise and those trying to get back up from a fall.
With the June callups mostly come and gone off your waiver wire, most notably Stephen Strasburg and Michael Stanton, you can spend your days anxiously awaiting the patient organizations that are holding back Carlos Santana, Pedro Alvarez, Brett Wallace and Aroldis Chapman ... or you can do what this guy tends to do in the summer months, turn your attention to the retreads.
The most-watched names in the minors now should be the ones we -- and their major league teams -- have perhaps already gotten sick of. Those being: Alex Gordon, Chris Davis, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Madison Bumgarner. Heck, even the likes of Brandon Wood and Matt LaPorta, who hit three homers in his return to Triple-A on Wednesday night, might be able to rediscover themselves.
That is what Triple-A is for. No, these are not your average Quadruple-A players. They are your potential Adam Lind's (circa 2009) or Josh Hamilton's -- Amazing Grace-style, once lost but now found.
Gordon has to be the most intriguing. He is making a transition to left field from third base, but more importantly, he has regained his aggressiveness at the plate and is showing a power stroke we haven't seen since he was back in Double-A in his first pro season in 2006: .325, 29 homers, 101 RBI, 111 runs, 22 steals, a .427 on-base percentage and .588 slugging percentage. He also chipped in 39 doubles.
Since his pro debut, Gordon hadn't spent anything but rehab assignments in the minors, posting a measely .249-38-142-165-28 (.331-.413) in 1,231 major-league at-bats. We figured by now the 26-year-old would have posted a 38-homer, 28-steal season, not have those numbers for his career.
He is back in Triple-A and finding that talent that once made him a bigger prospect than Ryan J. Braun and Evan Longoria amond third basemen. Gordon is currently sitting at .377-9-27-32-5 (.506-.669) in 130 at-bats, which would amount to a quarter of a season. He is hitting .419 against lefties (.545 OBP), too. That is from a guy that has hit .040 points lower against left-handers in his major-league career (.221) with an OBP below .300 (.291).
Owned in just 20 percent of CBSSports.com's leagues, Gordon belongs back in the major leagues. He is going to have to deal with some failures before the Royals give him a call, so once he finally struggles back in Triple-A and comes out of it, look for him back in the majors and getting added to Fantasy rosters.
The Rangers' Chris Davis already went through this last year. He was sent down to Triple-A, where he hit .327-6-30-27-0, .418-.521 in 165 at-bats, which led to a revival in the majors for Fantasy owners. He didn't slow down after his recall either, going .308-6-26-17-0, .338-.496 in 133 at-bats in the second half.
Gordon can beat that.
OK, so you need an option at a thinner position like catcher? Give Salty a try.
"He continues to make progress," GM Jon Daniels said last week. "We're probably going on two weeks where we've had all positive reports. That's what we need to see."
Saltalamacchia has cooled off considerably since that quote, but he doesn't have to be a world-beater at the thin catcher position to impact the Rangers and most Fantasy leagues. His .261-6-18-14-0 (.321-.454) statline is intriguing enough. He had been banged up and has been kept down to work on his throwing, but it has come around now.
"It's been night and day," Saltalamacchia said. "Just from a throwing aspect, I've come a long way. My confidence has gone up a lot. I'm just ready to get back up there and perform. I think I deserve to be there ... it's just the throwing that's been the issue. But I've made strides in that and I've proved to a lot of people that I can get through it. It's not been the prettiest thing, but it has gotten there and it's fine. I'm just ready to get back up there."
And, if you need a pitcher option, give Bumgarner a look. He was great down the stretch last year and was supposed to be the Giants' No. 5 starter out of spring training, but Todd Wellemeyer has been pitiful on the road and the Giants could be ready to make a change with the journeyman.
Bumgarner might have been up Thursday if not for his past Triple-A start, which was a statistical and psychological disaster. Bumgarner gave up nine hits and five runs (all earned), which brought his ERA back over 3.00 at 3.11. He was ejected from the game and had to be fined by the team for throwing the ball into the stands in disgust.
It sounds bad, but you have to like the fire in his belly. He certainly showed more competitiveness in that moment than Strasburg did jogging out that grounder in the hole in his first major-league at-bat. (Yes, I managed to criticize Mr. Precedent/Stratisburg.)
For the season, Bumgarner is 6-1, which included a slow start. He has to be a candidate to arrive in Fantasy Week 11 (June 14-20) instead of Wellemeyer. It doesn't even matter if that journeyman is healthy or not after leaving Thursday's start early with a quad issue.
Yes, we know Gordon, Davis, Salty and Bumgarner are not the sexy prospect names of Strasburg and Stanton, or even Santana, Alvarez, Chapman or Wallace. But the bet here is they make more of an impact in Fantasy leagues -- and likely sooner, too.
Here are some other potential "retreads" to consider down on the farm: Dexter Fowler, OF, COL; LaPorta, OF, CLE; Nolan Reimold, OF, BAL; Scott Sizemore, 2B, DET; Jeff Clement, C/1B, PIT; Mat Gamel, 3B, MIL; Fernando Martinez, OF, NYM; Michael Brantley, OF, CLE.

Here are the rest of the most-owned minor-leaguers who have yet to accumulate enough stats to matter or have yet to appear in any Double- or Triple-A games this season.
Rookie watch
Top AL rookies to date
- Neftali Feliz, RP, TEX -- It will be an interesting decision for the Rangers if he completes the year as a dominant closer here on out.
- Austin Jackson, OF, DET -- He has cooled off considerably again and he might not be able to hold off his fellow outfield teammate.
- Brennan Boesch, OF, DET -- He is becoming a cult hero in Detroit and if he sustains his current run he could be an All-Star.
- Mitch Talbot, SP, CLE -- Every time we think he is ready to take a turn for the worst, he winds up surprising us and winning again.
- Alfredo Simon, RP, BAL -- He is returning from the DL and back in the closer's role immediately. He very well could finish there.
- Honorable mentions: Wade Davis, SP, TB; Reid Brignac, SS, TB; John Jaso, C, TB; Joaquin Arias, SS, TEX; Justin Smoak, 1B, TEX; Brian Matusz, SP, BAL; Sergio J. Santos, RP, CHW and Alex Burnett, RP, MIN.
Top NL rookies to date
- Stephen Strasburg, SP, WAS -- It is hard to be better than he was in his first start and the second should be more of the same.
- Jason Heyward, OF, ATL -- We kind of regret buying into his hype over Strasburg as our No. 1 prospect coming into the year.
- Jaime Garcia, SP, STL -- The darkhorse in this race, but he will need some serious failures above for him to win the NL ROY.
- Mike Leake, SP, CIN -- He will be forgotten in his 2009 draft class, but he will always be the first to arrive from it.
- John Ely, SP, LAD -- The Dodgers are skipping him a couple of turns to cool him off and keep him under an innings limit.
- Honorable mentions: David Freese, 3B, STL; Starlin Castro, SS, CHC; Ian Desmond, SS, WAS; Gaby Sanchez, 1B, FLA; Jhoulys Chacin, SP, COL; John B. Axford, RP, MIL; Tyler Colvin, OF, CHC; Luis Atilano, SP, WAS; Hisanori Takahashi, SP, NYM; and Ryan Webb, RP, SD.
