Moustakas announced Monday that he's retiring. Moustakas spent time across five organizations during his 13-year MLB career, finishing with a .247 batting average, 215 home runs and 683 RBI over 1,427 games. He'll sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the Royals on May 31 to retire with the club he won a World Series with.

The White Sox released Moustakas on Friday, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. Moustakas joined the White Sox on a minor-league contract Feb. 14 after spending 2023 with both the Rockies and Angels. He didn't show much production during spring training as he slashed .195/.283/.317 with one home home run and two RBI over 41 at bats. Moustakas will look to catch onto another team's roster.

Moustakas is competing with Gavin Sheets for the final roster spot with the White Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Moustakas isn't currently on the 40-man roster, and he hasn't made much of a case to stick with the team with his play. Across 41 plate appearances in the Cactus League, he's struck out 29.3 percent of the time and has only two extra-base hits. Even so, he could be on the right side of the competition, as Sheets has one minor-league option remaining.

Moustakas signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Wednesday and received an invitation to major-league spring training. After a solid start to the season with the Rockies in 2023, Moustakas' production fell sharply upon being traded to the Angels in late June. He slashed just .236/.256/.371 across 250 plate appearances with the Halos. The 35-year-old Moustakas will have a chance to make the White Sox's Opening Day roster, but he would likely be limited to a reserve role with the big-league club.

Moustakas is out of the lineup Friday versus the Athletics. Michael Stefanic will start at third base and Brandon Drury will serve as the Angels' designated hitter with left-hander Ken Waldichuk toeing the slab for Oakland. Moustakas has posted a weak .542 OPS against southpaws this season.
