Romine was released Saturday by the Reds, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Romine was a non-roster invitee that signed with the Reds in December. The veteran backstop went 3-for-15 in Cactus League play with one home run. He's now free to join another organization, and could see interest from a club looking for depth at catcher.

Romine signed with the Reds as a non-roster invitee Tuesday. Romine appeared in his 11th big-league season last year, spending time with the Angels, Cardinals and Reds. He didn't make much of an impression with any of his three clubs, hitting a combined .155/.187/.248 in 51 games. He fits best as organizational depth at this point in his career.

Romine will sit Tuesday against the Cubs. Romine has had a slight edge in playing time over Tuesday's catcher Chuckie Robinson down the stretch, but he hasn't done nearly enough at the plate to have meaningful fantasy value even in very deep formats. In 36 games as a Red this season, he's hit .143/.170/.264.

Romine will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Cubs. Romine will make his third start in four games, despite going 0-for-6 over the weekend to bring his season-long batting average down to .156. The other catcher on the Reds' active roster, Chuckie Robinson, is slashing .107/.107/.196 over 56 plate appearances on the season, which likely explains why Romine is getting the larger share of playing time between the two despite his own lowly production.

Romine is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. Romine is on the bench for the third time in four games and may have been overtaken on the depth chart at catcher by Chuckie Robinson. Both backstops could soon lose out on opportunities, as Aramis Garcia (finger) started up a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville over the weekend and could be activated from the 60-day injured list in the coming days.
