  • Collin Cowgill: Embarks on coaching career
    By RotoWire

The Mariners announced Wednesday that Cowgill has been hired as the manager for the organization's Double-A affiliate in Arkansas, signaling the end of his playing career, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports. Cowgill had previously joined the Seattle organization on a minor-league deal last winter, but he didn't receive a promotion to the big club at any point during the 60-game 2020 campaign. The 34-year-old outfielder likely could have landed another minor-league deal this offseason if he wanted to keep his playing career going, but he'll instead transition into coaching. Cowgill, who last appeared in the majors in 2016, retires with a .234/.297/.329 slash line across 759 career plate appearances with the Diamondbacks, Athletics, Angels, Mets and Indians over parts of six big-league seasons.

  • Cowgill was still battling for a roster spot when spring training was suspended, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. The veteran, who last saw major-league regular-season action with the Indians in 2016, hit .250 (4-for-16) with one home run, one RBI and two runs across 12 Cactus League games. Cowgill appears to be battling Carlos Gonzalez for the final outfield spot, as Jarred Kelenic is expected to start the season at Double-A Arkansas and Braden Bishop has already been optioned to minor-league camp. Cowgill's best all-around big-league campaign came back in 2014 with the Angels, when he slashed .250/.330/.354 with 16 extra-base hits (10 doubles, one triple, five home runs) and 21 RBI across 106 games.

  • Cowgill signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Saturday as a non-roster invitee, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. After spending the past several seasons at the Triple-A level, Cowgill will get to work with the major-league coaching staff in 2020. The 33-year-old hit .228/.330/.440 with 12 home runs and eight stolen bases with Triple-A Fresno. Cowgill last appeared in the majors with the Indians in 2016.

  • Cowgill signed a minor-league deal with Philadelphia on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports. Cowgill will earn $800,000 if he makes the big-league roster. In 2017, the outfielder appeared in 58 games for Triple-A El Paso within the Padres' organization, slashing .235/.297/.390 with seven home runs and 24 RBI. He hasn't competed in the majors since playing in 55 games with the Angels in 2015, and is unlikely to make much of an impact at the highest level during this upcoming season.

  • Cowgill (rib) went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the Padres' Cactus League game against the Giants on Saturday. Cowgill had been sidelined for the previous two weeks with rib-cage tightness, which has effectively taken him out of the running for a reserve gig in the outfield. Look for him to be reassigned to minor-league camp in the coming days and open 2017 with Triple-A El Paso.
