The Angels released Shaw on Wednesday. A veteran of 796 career MLB appearances with five teams over 14 seasons, Shaw didn't get the chance to debut with the Angels after signing with the organization on a minor-league deal in April. The 36-year-old right-hander pitched exclusively at Triple-A Salt Lake, registering a 4.14 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 41.1 innings. Given the timing of his release, Shaw is unlikely to catch on with another organization before the end of the 2024 season, but he should be able to land a minor-league deal on the open market over the winter if he wants to keep his career going.

Shaw signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. He can earn a prorated $1.1 million if he's in the majors, per Fletcher. Shaw allowed five runs (four earned) over four innings for the White Sox this season before getting removed from their 40-man roster and later electing free agency. The 36-year-old reliever will presumably head to Triple-A Salt Lake for now but could get a look when the Angels need a fresh bullpen arm.

Shaw elected to become a free agent Saturday. Shaw went unclaimed off waivers after being designated for assignment Friday, and he will exercise his right to refuse an outright assignment in order to become a free agent. The 36-year-old righty posted a 4.53 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across 49.2 innings during his time with the White Sox, though he got off to a slow start with the team this year before being DFA'd, giving up four runs over four frames.

Shaw was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday. Shaw allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and four walks over four innings to get booted off the 40-man roster. The veteran reliever will likely pass through waivers unclaimed and would have the opportunity to elect free agency rather than accept a minor-league assignment if he does.

Shaw is a candidate to earn saves for the White Sox this season, Jack Magruder of MLB.com reports. Shaw is in camp on a minor-league deal, but he pitched fairly effectively for the White Sox last season by maintaining a 4.14 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with a 40:17 K:BB across 45.2 innings. He also logged four saves and four holds, showing some ability to pitch in high-leverage situations. Shaw's role remains far from certain however, as Chicago's bullpen is wide open, and general manager Chris Getz specifically declined to name a closer early in spring training.
