  • Franklin (quad) will play his first rehab game for High-A Bradenton on Wednesday, John Perrotto of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Franklin missed all of spring training after straining his quad early in camp. Upon completion of his rehab, he should return to Triple-A Indianapolis and serve as organizational depth.

  • The Pirates reassigned Franklin (hamstring) to their minor-league camp Monday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. Franklin picked up a right hamstring injury early in camp and never played in any Grapefruit League games, ruining his slim chances of breaking camp with the big club. Unless he demonstrates some meaningful progress over the next week or two, he'll likely open the season on the injured list at Triple-A Indianapolis.

  • Franklin has yet to play in the Grapefruit League because of right hamstring tightness, John Perrotto of DK Pittsburgh Sports reports. The non-roster invitee is fighting an uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster. Although he's taking part in baseball activities and getting close to making his spring debut, Franklin will likely start the 2019 campaign in Triple-A.

  • Franklin signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Wednesday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. The 27-year-old spent time in the Brewers organization last season and attempted to add the catcher position to his already expansive defensive toolset. However, he only appeared in three games behind the dish at the Double-A level. Then, when he finally got his chance to go to the majors, he injured his quad just four innings into his season debut and missed the rest of the season. Franklin will have a chance to crack the major-league roster out of spring training as a utility man, but he will need to outperform players like Pablo Reyes, Erik Gonzalez, Kevin Kramer and Kevin Newman during spring training in order to break camp.

  • The Brewers activated Franklin (quadriceps) from the 60-day disabled list Sunday and outrighted him to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Franklin, who was in the midst of a rehab assignment at High-A Carolina, had been sidelined since early May with the right quad strain. The utility man appears to be fully healthy at this point, but the Brewers don't have much of a need for Franklin with Tyler Saladino and Hernan Perez capable of playing three infield spots and Jacob Nottingham on hand as the team's No. 3 catcher. Franklin will finish out the season in the Pacific Coast League before hitting free agency this winter, when he'll likely have to settle for a minor-league deal.
